Hi,

I'm umming and ahhing about whether to buy a PS3 (slim, 250GB).

My main concerns are:

1. SD DVD picture quality. If I bought a PS3 it would replace my current DVD player (a 12 year old Sony S725D). Am I likely to experience huge differences in picture quality? I haven't gone HD yet, so I'll only be watching SD DVDs.

2. Fan noise: is this really intrusive?

Having searched the web, I'm none the wiser. Lots of conflicting reviews etc, so any help would be much appreciated...

If you have an Hdmi tv, it will be a good upgrade, cannot tell about the fan noise because i Have the phat version, which is not too noisy, I have a samsung dvd player which is far too noisy while playing dvd's(you can hear it spin)

Hi AP_ Red

You will notice a big difference with the PS3 on SD DVD, as for the fan noise i have a phat PS3 and this is now my 2nd choice BRP as i have a Sony BDP-S350, when i only had a PS3 i got use to the fan noise, yes it's there and you will get use to it...

Are you planning to use the PS3 for gaming? If not why not get the Sony BDP-S360.......

The PS3 slim 250 is a pretty good SD DVD player and will surely beat your 12 year old player, as for the fan noise,it really is almost silent in operation.

Apart from gaming, PS3 is also a wireless media streamer with 120/250GB hard drive.

That's very true Bigboss, sorry i failed to mention that, the only reason i suggested the BDP-360 is the OP only mentioned he would be watching SD DVD and the possible fan noise.........

Hi

Thanks for all the responses - much appreciated.

I guess the main reason for my post is that if I ditch my current DVD player in favour of the PS3, would I be disappointed. I know that it could be a trade off - although my DVD player is over 10 years old, it's a cracker, but then I can't use it play games, as a media hub etc.

At the moment I'm not concerned about Blu-Ray, but will be when the times comes to get an HD TV.

My worry is that PS3 standard definition DVD playback would similar to a £50 machine from Tesco...

It's a very good player which will obviously look at it's best with an HD tv, it's about all the added benefits to, so it's up to you really

(PS3 Fat) Not a bad player on both DVD formats. It's good even on my little 19in LG monitor. It doesn't make a lot of noise hardly hear it as I am too engrossed in the HD audio from my Yammy Yamaha.. I don't know about the slim fan....

I used to use a PS3 Slim as a DVD/BD player and was more than happy with it. By all accounts fan noise on the slim is actually reduced over the earlier version and I certainly never found it to be a problem. At the time mine was hardly used for games at all just functioned as a "media hub" and for the price I don't think you can fault it.

250GB PS3 no problem with DVD playback but don't go over a 42ins TV

Have bought quite a few DVD's of late whose picture quality is on a par with their Blu Ray counterparts EG: New Moon, Wild Hogs...in fact some of the more recently released films now being produced on DVD are as good as their Blu Ray counterparts

I have not really noticed any fan noise form my PS3. I use it mostly for watching DVD and BD. I also store all my holiday photos there too,a great way to bore the family and friends!!

MikeyDave:Why would you not go over 42ins?

Exactly! why not over 42ins? I play my PS3 through a 5090 with stunning results.

I have to say that fan noise has never seemed to be an issue with the PS3 - if you want someting noisy try an X Box 360 - horendous in comparison and an inferior piece of kit in every way in terms of build

Because of the upscaling you get nowadays the picture would certainly be superior to your 12 year old machine

Talking of which can anyone explain the scaling settings for DVD on the PS3 as I have never got my head around them

Hi Robstar,

Indeed the PS3 is light years ahead of xbox. If you look on youtube you can find guides of how to set up your ps3 and indeed on this forum i'd imagine. Most of the settings are straight forward but there are things like "super white" and a few other settings that I havent come across before. I suppose you could get your other kit to do the upscaling such as your tv or amp.

Good Luck :)
