PS3 and Denon 1909

I'm really sorry for asking this but I'm stumped! I've just got the Denon 1909 and hooked it up (via HDMI) to my PS3 (BD audio settings set to bitstream) yet, I still don't seem to be getting any HD sound? Any ideas? I've been through all the settings on both devices and can't see what I'm missing. In theory, I thought as long as the PS3 is set to bitstream then the 1909 should just pick it up? The Denon light to signify HD sound doesn't light up so is it not getting through or just that the PS3 is doing the decoding so the 1909 doesn't show it?

I read through all the forums and can't see anything that I haven't already done. When checking audio settings on the PS3 (http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/audiooutput.html ) it doesn't actually list DTS HD or DD HD but just the regular version DTS and Dolbt Digital. Is it actually supported?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

the ps3 decodes hd audio onboard. On the ps3 audio settings, set the output to lpcm..i think there are a few previous threads which cover this subject in a bit of detail

The setting is under BD / DVD Settings -> BD / DVD Audio Format (HDMI). Set this to Linear PCM when you want to hear any of the HD audio formats. Your amp should then display Mulitchannel as this is the format the PS3 is sending the audio signal as once it has decoded it from Dolby TrueHD / DTS HD Master Audio / any other format.

Thanks Prof although it states Multi Channel on the screen, none of the DTS HD or DDHD lights are showing, is this to be expected due to the PS3 decoding? In which case, am I actually getting HD sound but it's just not showing it on the denon?

thanks again, off to watch Batman Begins! 🙂

Yup that's correct. Because the decoding is done at the PS3 before it's sent, the amp does not know the signal used to be in Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD Master Audio etc., all it knows is what it is now which is Multichannel PCM, hence why there are no lights on the amp. If you press the Select button the PS3 whilst playing, it'll tell you the format it is decoding.

Sorry dude, one more final question and then I'll go away quietly, if I have my BD/DVD audio set to Linear PCM and then pop in a PS3 game, do I need to reset back to bitstream for the best audio as I would if I was watching a DVD or doesn't it make any difference?

cheers!

Sorry to hijack your thread...................

I have a PS3 hooked up to my Onkyo 605 and have the same situation with having to use PCM multichannel. Was wondering if a dedicated Blue-ray such as the Panasonic BD30 or 50 or one of the Sony's would send the HD audio to my the Onkyo and have the amp do the decoding..........

If so...would I notice any difference at all? assuming it should be a better quality of HD audio decoding ? or would it just be an expensive way to get a light to come on ?

I normally set mine back I have to say (just so I can see what format of sound is in the game) but I haven't actually done any testing to see which is better. I think if there is anything in it, it's going to be pretty minimal.

Honestly, I don't know as I haven't got a player capable of both (I only have the PS3 at the moment). In my mind, it would be worth upgrading to a stand alone Blu-Ray player for a much improved picture / sound due to the quality of components involved (e.g. I'm enviously eyeing up the Denon DVD-2500BT). I don't think it would be worth getting a player which can bitstream the formats just to switch a light on. If you get the Panasonic BD55, there is every chance it would sound better than the PS3 - whether that was down to the bitstreaming or the different components used in each device though is impossible for me to say.
