if i was looking for something in this price range, (and if the op can use a laptop or i'pod as a source for now), i'd be looking at demoing the rega brio r and the rega dac with the speakers of their choice. maybe a bit over budget with r3's or r5's but deffo worth it and as somebody said before the new rega spinner will be released shortly in the same half sized casework. i think that lot would take some beating and a class above the marantz pairing. sorry i dont know what rega dealers are around in scotland but a quick google then a phone call to book a demo would be my plan.
