PlayStation3 VS BDP-S350

I'm disappointed to find out that the PlayStation3's sound and vision are not even up to par with Sony’s own BDP-S350. Would the picture be better than (or at least on par with BDP-S350) if I feed the PlayStation3 to Onkyo TX-SR876 and let the HQV process the signal for output to my Epson Home Cinema 1080 UB Projector?

I'm not sure why you're disappointed, most people would feel that a dedicated Blu-Ray player at a similar price point should definitely outclass the PS3 - Sony would be doing something wrong with the BDP-S350 if it didn't. Remember, the PS3 does a lot more than play Blu-Rays so is still outstanding value for money so long as you're going to use those other features.
Upscaling through the Onkyo might improve the DVD performance on the PS3, but obviously it can't improve Blu-Ray performance since there is no upscaling involved when playing a Blu-Ray.

Totally with the Prof. Also, when you look at it from Sony's point of view, they have to be careful about how they position the PS3. If they make it too good, they wouldn't sell many stand-alone decks. And considering their stand-alone decks make them a much higher profit margin, it would be a pretty bad business decision. Playing Blu-Ray through your 876 won't really make a difference to the picture resolution but if the ISF mode is properly set-up you might get some benefit. I don't have one so I'm not exactly sure how the ISF mode on the 876 works.

If I don't really want to use the Playstation for heavy gaming, what other functions can we use it for? Hard drive recorder? Network capabilities? I was considering whether to get a PS3 or Wii. The PS3 seemed like a much more powerful machine with lots of functions and the Blu-ray player but the Wii seemed like a lot more fun.

I would deffinitley opt for the ps3,
Gaming is superb (What I have played), The BRay capabilities are excellent value for money, Play TV works a treat as a PVR, A built in web browser and a complete storage system..What more do you want for your money....?

I agree to go for the PS3 and because of the PS3s HDMI connection you also have a great way to get other stuff to your TV/AV receiver. For instance i use MediaLink to wirelessly connect my laptop to the PS3 enabling me to play movies/songs etc.

I think it depends on what type of games you like. I've played on a Wii and, while it's a lot of fun (especially in groups), the games don't really have a lot of substance. I couldn't see myself playing Wii Sports after the first week unless a load of people came round, whereas there are plenty of games on my Xbox (which are also available on the PS3) that I'm still playing months after buying them.
So if you're just looking for a bit of fun to have with when friends are round, then the Wii is a good bet, but if you actually enjoy gaming, I'd go for the PS3 or Xbox (or both like me

Thanks for all the recommendations. Looks like I need to take a closer look at the PS3 then as well before making any final decision. Am I right to say that a PS3 would add in any "networking" features that an Onkyo 906 would have over the Onkyo 876? In other words, from a features/value standpoint, I would be better off buying an Onkyo 876 + PS3 rather than just getting an Onkyo 906?

I agree with the point about the Wii games. They are fun with many people around as they are simple enough to pick up easily but it will get quite monotonous if you're playing alone.
