i currently have a "high end" 1080p sony kdl46-w905 but want the big screen size like you get in the cinema which makes it so much more immersive. although there are several problems i might face trying to get a projector in my living room..

Short throw vs (normal? or long throw). my speakers and av receiver are staying where they are 100% not moving them at all. so having a normal throw projector at the other end will be a huge pain having to run huge speaker wire and hdmi cables (hdmi mainly will cost a ton)

picture quality. if i spend about £500-600 on a projector will the inferior picture quality make a huge difference on the big screen and left me disappointed? ive read reviews on a certain optoma short throw projector which seems good but the colours brightness and PQ all got average marks. ive also seen a projector by benq which has a "wireless kit" that allows you to have it at the other side of the room but have it all wirelessly connected via an optional kit. would it work with a sony str-dn1040 receiver?

I know very little about projectors, but you haven't chosen to tell us how big your room is, which is highly relevant.
....and how is the lighting? Can you achieve complete darkness?

room is about 16ft long and 14 foot wide. Can't achieve complete darkness but my curtains are poor at the moment so would take reasonable measures to be able to combat the lighting.

BenQ W1070 is a good option. Check this thread:

http://www.whathifi.com/forum/tvs-and-projectors/looking-decent-sub-ps1500-full-hd-projector.

Screen quality is important too. What's your budget for the screen? Fixed or motorised? What's your viewing distance? Do you want acoustically transparent screen or not bothered about it?

A projector can potentially be significantly superior to TV. I would recommend reserving it for movies only instead of everyday viewing due to 2 reasons:

1) Projector bulb life is limited and can be expensive to replace. Usually, you'll need to change the bulb every 3500 hours or so.

2) If you use the projector for all viewing, the charm of watching a film on a large screen is lost.

i don't have a budget for the screen however I would like to spend as little as possible while still getting a recent one. Fixed as not bothered. And what is acoustically transparent screen do? Viewing distance is about 8ft from TV at the moment but I can make it closer or further away with no problem. I don't watch TV only use TV for movies and the occasional YouTube streaming when watching videos but that might not be possible on a projector..

Acoustically transparent screen only if you want to place the speakers behind the screen. It's more expensive than a plain screen. If the speakers are coming on the sides, then don't bother with it.

i seen a couple of 92" screens on RS. What size would you suggest when seated 8-9ft away, the 92 was the biggest I seen for around £100-150.

I deliberately did not suggest 92" screens to you. It's too big. For your viewing distance, 77" is fine.

If you check the THX recommended size here, it's 71" for 8 feet and 80" for 9 feet:
