In the last couple of days I have purchased a 60GB Playstation 3 to act as a blu ray player with my Panasonic TX-32LXD700 tv. My question though (allbeit probably a bit of stupid one) is whether I have to download anything to get the 'firmware udpate' mentioned in both the WHFSAV october issue and the awards issue? This update apparently gave 24fps video and better dvd upscaling but I do not know whether this was achieved at manufacture or had to be done by a download. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

hey mate,

It's done via download. If you head into your PS3's settings area and go to System Update, it'll take a while to download but it's straight forward enough process, well worth it. My PS3 is now my dedicated DVD/CD/BD player and even if it doesn't get as much gaming as I thought it would when I bought it at launch I'm very happy with it as the centre-piece of my Home Cinema system

Hey Oscar Peterson alias Mr Lamb-What's your PS3 like with Blu Ray, and how good is at at upscaling normal DVD's?

Are you able to select the level of Upscaling E.G 720p/1081i?

Hey Tallyho. I know you didn't address the question to me but thought I would try and help as I have downloaded the update mentioned in my first post.

The Blu-ray playback is quite astonishing for such a reasonably priced player, I have put Casino Royale through it onto my Panasonic and it looks breathtaking. However, in regards to dvd upscaling my experience has been a bit mixed. When I played Ice Age 2 in standard dvd it looked really incredible almost like it was jumping out the screen at you. Blood Diamond though was a different story as it looked pixilated and showed some noticeable motion blurring. Casino Royale on Blu Ray and the standard dvd of Ice Age 2 showed no such signs of these issues. So I don't know whether i am doing something wrong but maybe someone can tell me if i could be, like is there an upscaler you have to switch on? Anyway hope this helps you for now.

P.S. You can definitley select 720p/1080i/1080p for blu ray content

Thanks Monkey:

Can you download the firmware with a USB key. The reason why I ask is that my PC is upstaies and the PS3 would be downstairs, so I was hoping that I could download via a USB key and then take it and plug it in to the PS3 downstairs and download the firmware into it from the key itself?
