I have the Rega Planar 1 with the basic carbon cartridge and wondered about something better sounding
Suggestions??

What's your budget?Bias 2 any good??
The majority of cartridges do not have Rega 3 screw mounting so you'd have to be able to set up adjustments. Any cartridge change is likely to be a different weight so you'll need something to measure tracking weight accurately. Not fitted a cartridge in 30 years, is it tricky?
Budget about £100
As I said it's not as easy as Rega cartridges because it doesn't have a three screw fixture. Do you have any gauges or a stylus balance for setting tracking force? Is the goldring e3 an easy setup?
Most of them are almost the same - they use 2 screws on the side, but even a Butterfingers such as myself managed to install several cartridges, so it's not hardcore difficult stuff - search YouTube for some videos, and you'll get a better feel than from reading text. But a very brief description is you balance the tonearm (or remove it), you link the wires, you screw the cart so it stays fixed, but don't tighten the screws, then you set the tracking weight, put the protractor on the platter, lower the tonearm so the needle goes in one of the points, check for alignment, then check the alignment on the other point, and then losen the screws so you can move the cart back or forth so the cantilever is aligned when the stylus touches both the points. After that, you tighten the screws, set the correct tracking force for the new position, and you're set.Is the goldring e3 an easy setup?
I'll check, if it is you're a bit buggered when it comes to changing cartridges.I didn't think that you could adjust the tracking weight on the Rp1, i thought it was set
Why did you think tracking force was set? It is for the cartridge you have but that isn't to say it's not adjustable...... I hope.Cheers Al
Understood, I assume that counterweight can be moved backwards.Because when i set the deck up there was no adjustment involved, just slide the counterweight on
What i mean is, there is no bias slider on the rp1Understood, I assume that counterweight can be moved backwards.
This is true and often why people tend to upgrade these by changing the tonearm by doing this you get much more upgrade potential. What i mean is, there is no bias slider on the rp1
You might find a cheaper option to upgrade the stylus on the Carbon is sufficient, see below:-This is true and often why people tend to upgrade these by changing the tonearm by doing this you get much more upgrade potential.
To be honest a change of cartridge is not going to be that effected by a preset bias as they all need some applied.
Better than that which you have and possibly a good starting point although future upgrades will be more expensive for that particular turntable. Give it a try and see, it isn't an arm and a leg. However this is expected as it is a base model.Wow Al that's cheap, any good?
The newer version is the AT VM95e and it would certainly work well, certainly a good choice at that price pointAt95e any good for my Rega?
