Being a bit of a Pioneer fanboy, I'm sure it's a cracking bit of kit. However as Pioneer has released its budget receivers more recently, in some respects it's been outdone by its lower-grade but more recent VSX-1131 which includes more music streaming facilities: Google Cast, "Fire Connect" multi-room (Pioneer's answer to Yamaha's Music Cast) and native streaming for Deezer and Tidal.

Obviously in every other respect the LX89 is superior, but for those interested in these streaming features, it might be worth holding on for the LX90 which I'm sure would include them. Or wait till the LX89 is heavily discounted and buy a Bluesound Node with the money saved and probably have some change leftover.

Being a Pioneer fanboy I thought you would have known the SC-LX90 (Susano) was released back in 2008! ;)

No, I thought that too but he was going 89 and then 90. Counting up, he wasn't talking about the Susano.

Future Pioneer amps will be made by Onkyo.

Apologies to Onkyo owners, but I view that with some trepidation I must say. I hope Onkyo won't tamper with the Pioneer house sound too much. Given Pioneer's successes in recent years (by reviewers' opinions anyway, whatever that's worth), it would be a shame if they went south after the takeover. Does your comment mean that the LX89 is the last "true" Pioneer AVR? I suppose the proof will be in next year's pudding.

Yes the lx89 is the true last Pioneer amp.

Yes I realised that Gel, my point was any successor to the SC-LX89 won't be called the SC-LX90 as it has already been released! I doubt they would call it the SC-LX91 either, since there is the Pioneer Blu ray player BDP LX-91 which it could get confused with!

I suspect Pioneer always planned to get out of the AV business when they did, hence the numbering of their amps with the 89 being the last true flagship Pioneer amp going up to the prior released 90 which was a £5000 amp which they never really surpassed.

Since Onkyo bought Pioneer's AV division they have announced new entry level receivers but as yet nothing new in the SC-LX range so we will have to wait and see.

Interestingly the additional streaming features offered by the more recently released Pioneer budget AVRs are identical to those of Onkyo's latest.

I suppose the big question is how much Onkyo-based R&D will go into next year's Pioneer flagship. If they simply bought Pioneer to spoil it, it seems an odd decision, if only to kill off one of their main competitors. You'd think they'd leave the R&D well alone to the Pioneer engineers, but perhaps pool resources in terms of purchasing power. Is it going to be like when BMW bought Rover? If so, that'll be a shame. Up there with the death of Panny Plasmas.

I think I read somewhere what they are going to be called but can't remember where and what. If I remember correctly they weren't lx89 or anything like that.

Pioneer usually release the entry level receivers in the spring and the mid and top level receivers in the fall. This year will be the same.

From what I heard recently from people in the industry, we don't have to worry that anythings going to change as a far as product developpment goes. I expect the kind of collaboration they have at D&M between Denon and Marantz. joint dsitribution and service, technological platform sahring up to a cetain point and amplifier developpment will be to each is own.

Hopefully...
