Aha! it is not the deck, it is the kenwood amp i am using, crackle from the volume knob and right channel seems to have a dry joint or something, though only in the phono stage, if i wiggle my knob (volume, for goodness sake) i can get it near perfect.....Roll on the arrival of the marantz.

Doug Brady's maybe? Been there for years and I think they sell t/t's. Worth a ring if nothing else as they might know of someone if they don't.
