I read in this months issue that the PDP LX5090 can be found for close to £1500. The question is where ? I have been looking to purchase either this or the Sony KDL52W4500, the Pioneer being the preference especially now the price seems to be coming down. Problem is, having contacted suppliers and trawled the net for offers I cannot find it for anything less than £2000. I am happy to pay a bit more if necessary but if I can save close on £500 thats half way to a set of speakers. Can anyone help ?

I've not seen them for anywhere close to £1500, £1800 maybe but that was a couple of months ago. There was a Pioneer price increase on the 1st April therefore that might be the reason for the £2k price tag now.

You also need to take into account that since Pioneer made their announcement, sales (of the 50" models mostly, not so much the 60" ones so you can get them for pretty reasonable prices still) have gone through the roof, so as my local Pioneer Level 1+ Dealer told me the other week, it's not surprising that Pioneer are taking the opportunity to cream some more money off the top. Before anyone complains, given Pioneer's slightly dodgy recent financial results you can't really blame them for trying to get as much out of the market as possible.

Luckily I got my 500A before the price increases, so I am alright Jack...

Hi,

The 50" models are in very short supply it seems - very few places have them in stock and many have pre-orders placed so they are already sold before they are in. They were never that cheap at any point so the chances of buying one now at that price is next to nil or very slim at the least!

Indeed, they are becoming in short-supply. A few months back when I was looking for an lx5090 you could get one for around £1650. Now you are looking at £2000 minimum.

I asked the AV shop that I deal with to price match back then when they were at £1650. They said the best they could do it for was £1750. I said ok so long as they threw in a wall mount and some cables as I was ordering a load of other stuff too. Went in to the shop just last week to finallly order everthing I wanted and they still honoured the £1750 they quoted me back then. So, I actually ended up with a bargain! I did spend £5000 in total though, so that's what probably swung it.

id be carefull buying the 52w4500 ( i have nothing against sony by the way ) most reviews talk of backlight bleed and clouding , the newer 52w5500 is better in this regard ( according to most reviews ) and has better sd picture , id also check out samsung52 b650 if the kuro is out of your reach ...

Sevenoaks Sound and Vision is offering the Pioneer PDP-LX5090 for £1899 if you buy it with AV components worth £2500

It's generally easier to get discounts if you're buying more stuff from the same shop. I reserved my KRP 500A on 25th March for £2199 with 5 year warranty. My dealer price matched with the best online rate (although that was only with 1 year warranty, & I got 5!) because I bought other stuff worth £3900. I need the TV to be installed at my new house in June, but reserved it in March anyway before the price increase.
