So my question is this: Is this the closest we'll come to at this size to at least equal the mighty KURO? If the answer is yes then I shall buy, fit and enjoy. If the answer is no then I'll have to rethink.

If you're lucky Nick from the Home Cinema Centre might answer your question, he has one in his demonstration room! Do you want a new set for watching films or for gaming? In ten days I'll be in Manchester and I'm hoping to be able to compare the VT50 series with the ST50 series.

The major reason for looking to increase the screen size is that I now sit 4.8m away from the TV as opposed to 2.5 - 3.0m before and I'm finding I'm less "immersed".

Why are you now sitting further away from the television? Especially for 3D. I have three rows of seating in my parlour, but for maximum visual effect the closest row is best, and that is 3m away from my 64" Samsung. If you must be 4.8m away and you want to be immersed, you'll have to go for the 80" Sharp TV, or a projector.

Son of SJ - "gaming"????...never! ha ha. Sorry, just I have spent years avoiding all but my sons best efforts to attach some form of games machine to my beloved KURO that to mention the words "gaming" and "KURO" in the same breath lead almost to war.

I would suggest that 50% of viewing will be HD TV and the other 50% bluray.

The reason for the increased viewing distance is due to the removal of my pool table and addition of my previously missing family. We found two teenage sons, one 6 year old son and wife plus me on one sofa that was previously lounged on by only myself to be a bit of a squeeze! So Pool table sold, TV and plasma fire built into a false chimny breast/central Island/Ikea project type thingummyjig and the imminent arrival of three sofas!

Cheers.

camdxr, just to offer you some reassurance on the whole KURO 'gaming' question, have used mine for gaming for years now with both 360 and PS3, for extended periods (5-6 hours at a time with the likes of 'Mass Effect' etc), and have never had any issues with image retention/screen burn.

Can't say would happen after a 24 hour gaming 'binge' (those days are sadly behind me) but for normal use it should be fine.

mr malarky, thanks for that, tbh I asked the question last Christmas as the "boys" were spending the festive season with me and that lead to the purchase of a PS3. After splashing out 4300GBP when the TV was new, and hearing so many horror stories, I just think that maybe it lead to me being overly cautious. I just think that old habits die hard, even now when pausing live TV or a bluray I switch off the TV!.....just can't help myself....What is it they say about old dogs?

You were right to be cautious - take it from someone who did a great job of burning a permanent 'Health' bar into their first Hitachi plasma back in the day!

No 3D glasses though (I don't think), but I don't have a 3D blu ray player, or Sky 3D anyway.

3D really doesn't bother me.

You know what to do just phone up and say where's my 3D glasses when it's delivered - that's what I did.

The promotion is still on the Internet. That is how I got mine.

Did you pay full price for your GT gel?(if you don't mind me asking)

Just wondered because I'm feeling a little uncomfortable asking for free 3D glasses when I got £450 off the usual price. I can't remember if the sale tag mentioned free glasses, I presume it probably didn't.

Hi mate

I paid £1200 with John Lewis because I got a price match with Total Digital. I then discovered I had no glasses, but the VT30 does include the glasses even on price match with John Lewis. So the offer with the GT50 clealy states you get the glasses free on a special offer, so definitely worth a try. I definitely would try, they can only say no, but just say you bought the TV either Instore or online and you have not got the glasses included - that's what I did.

Thanks gel.

No harm in asking I suppose, will just have to get myself in the zone before ringing, otherwise I'll just be really apologetic when I ask, which will undoubtedly result in failure.

I have now sold them on eBay for £70, because I have no interest in 3D, so total price for me around £1130.

No probs.

When you get it just check it out thoroughly - football is a good one to try out because some people reported vertical lines on the screen. Other than that they are pretty issue free. With John Lewis they should exchange within 7 days if you have any issues.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi mate

How's the TV going? Did you get the glasses?

Hi gel

Tv arrived last night, so no time to do anything with it yet. As for the glasses, I need to ring JL about the 5 year warranty anyway, so will broach the subject then, though I do expect them to say no.

Hi mate

Ah cool, let us know how you get on, because the glasses are free with it, and that deal has been going for a couple of months now.

You will be able to give us an unbiased comparison of the 2 tvs hopefully. :)

Yeah will do. Might try them side by side before the Kuro leaves me. Mine is not as good as the 5090 or KRP, so we'll see how it measures up

Hello BBB, we're still hoping for that comparison of the new Panasonic 50GT50B with your soon-to-depart Pioneer PDP-LX508D. My particular points of interest are black level and sharpness. These two points because in my particular case although my Samsung in the parlour does not have the black level of the Kuros, especially the 9th generation 5090 in the kitchen, it is sharper than the Kuros, even with the sharpness control at only 20 out of 100.

I've had the Pana since Thursday evening, but haven't tried it yet. Just keep looking at the Kuro and thinking to myself "Have I done the right thing?". I Know I won't know until I try the Pana, but it's going to be very hard letting the Kuro go. I want to sell it to someone I know, then I can pop round now and again to see it.

Hi mate

With John Lewis you are allowed to try it, even if you change your mind after seven days, and decide you don't want it. I would be very surprised if you were not 100 per cent happy. So go for it.

I guess what the previous buyer did, which was why it was reduced by JL. I know it's a great tv, it's just the Kuro has been the best tv I've ever had, picture is still stunning, looks great, so it's gonna be hard to see it go.

I'm not going to sell on ebay and let then take 10% of the selling price, so I'm either going to sell it to someone I know, or on AVForums classified section.

I'd like to put the Pana in the bedroom and keep the Kuro in the lounge for now, but money wise I can't really afford to do it, plus the value of the Kuro will keep tumbling.

Will set up the Pana later, just not now.

Ah, I sympathise, BBB. You sound like a man who is about to take up seriously with a new woman, but who also can't stop thinking about his ex!

However, I'm more callous. When I got my Samsung TV in March the 50" Pioneer was demoted from the parlour to the kitchen without a second's thought!
