The main reason I'll be sticking with the Kuro though is my wife.

Well, seven days since I declared that I'd be sticking with the Kuro, John Lewis offer up a GT50 for £950.

What is a bloke supposed to do with that kind of temptation?

I'll tell you what he does, he waits for his wife to go to another department (she got bored quite quickly), then he only goes a buys it.

Delivering Thursday, 5 year guarantee, £950. Lovely

Anyone want a Kuro?

If I had the money, I'd be seriously inclined to offer you £600 for your Kuro, or alternatively £500 for your Kuro AND your wife!

What are you trying to say about my wife?

This was clearance gel, but not a mark on it, and 5 year guarantee included means I can't really go wrong.

I had been looking at getting a WD TV Live for around £80, and I probably won't need that now. Hopefully will get around £600 for the Kuro, so kind of a net spend of £270 for a virtually brand new tv with 5 year guarantee. I just had to buy it, and the wife isn't too miffed either as it's Panasonic (Japanese).

Would've been divorce if I'd bought a Samsung though

That is a super price - especially being with John Lewis too. Got myself a DVD cabinet in next sale today for £60 - just set it up. I have loads of new room for Blu-rays now. Will you buy the 3D stuff or just stay 2D?

2D, but I might get some glasses if the BBC do some 3D broadcasting soon

No 3D glasses though (I don't think), but I don't have a 3D blu ray player, or Sky 3D anyway.

3D really doesn't bother me.

You know what to do just phone up and say where's my 3D glasses when it's delivered - that's what I did.

The promotion is still on the Internet. That is how I got mine.

Bit cheeky at that bargain price, but might do.

I imagine that you would be able to get rid (of the Kuro!) pretty quickly via the classified advertisements on AV Forums.

It is immaculate, still some warranty left, so hopefully will go to a good home. I am going to miss it, really am.

Out of curiosity, which particular (model and size) Samsung TV might have left you a happily single man?

I gather that the BBC will be doing some of the Olympics in 3D, but then again, they were supposed to do the Wimbledon men's final in 3D, and my friend Laura (and seven other competent people) couldn't get the 3D service at all!

Any Samsung son of sj, my wife is Japanese, so the Korean tv in the bedroom is as much as I'm allowed.

Just watching Harry Potter at the moment - the blacks are excellent! Looking forward to hearing how you get on with it, remember any issues just report straight away.

I've just checked on the John Lewis website, and this evening's price for the Panasonice 50GT50B plasma, with two pairs of 3D glasses and a five-year guarantee, is £1,399!

How on earth did you manage to get it for £449 less?? I guess they must have liked the look of your now-famous wife, even if she was in another department!

It was clearance, a customer return. Immaculate though, and 5 year warranty, but not sure about the free glasses.

You will be able to give us an unbiased comparison of the 2 tvs hopefully. :)

Yeah will do. Might try them side by side before the Kuro leaves me. Mine is not as good as the 5090 or KRP, so we'll see how it measures up

Been chewing this over for a few months now, always been happy with my 5090 but keep reading reviews of the 55" VT50 and the prospect of comparable picture quality with larger screen size is very tempting; just two things holding me back: 1) my soon-to-be wife will go mental (supposed to be saving for a wedding!), and 2) OLED is only just round the corner, and until we've seen it 'in the flesh' it's too soon to say if it's over-hyped or a genuine game-changer!?!

Why would anyone sell a 5090 / 6090 - unless 3D was essential

Instead buy an eye1 lean how to it calibrate it - run it with a high ish contrast off 36-40 depending on eye strain and be prepared to instantly see how 3D is not necessary - if our Kuro is calibrated with that amount of pop you will be amazed. If its not calibrated and you don't fancy learning even though it's easy with them get someone in - its amazing the difference it makes - its an upgrade that's like having a new tv

3d is foobar on anything other than a big screen - perfect for a pj new Panasonic in mind

Leaving all other factors aside, the 55" VT50 is definitely not enough of a size increase over your existing 50" Pioneer 5090 to make the exercise worthwhile. In September 2009 I replaced my 42" Pioneer which was then in the parlour with the 50" Pioneer, and of about eight visitors who had seen the 42" set previously, nobody noticed the size increase. In March this year I replaced the 50" Pioneer in the parlour with the 64" Samsung, and the only reason why one person (eventually) noticed was because the Samsung has a silver bezel, as opposed to the black bezels of the Pioneers. From your existing 50" screen, you have to go up to at least a 60" to make a real difference, and preferably to a 64" or 65".

You could always try BigBernardBresslaw's trick of leaving your fiancee in another department while you buy your new larger TV .....

Define " 'just' round the corner", at a decent size (greater than 50") and at a sensible cost, ie not many thousands of pounds. The magazine editors and those in the trade will know the likely timescale, but you might be on to at least your second child before OLED becomes widespread.

I'll be in Manchester over the weekend of 28th/29th July, and I'm hoping to see some of the larger Panasonic ST50 series televisions to see how they compare with the VT50 series, which I have seen, and whether a useful, wedding-savings-friendly economy can be made by going for the cheaper series.

think leaving her in another department when i buy it will only work if i leave her in another house when i instal it! Let me know how manchester goes? The old trick of showing how I've "saved" money while spending it might just work.

At present, even if I were suddenly to come into a LOT of money, I have no plans to sell my LX5090, currently in the kitchen. My favourite sister-in-law however is growing tired of her 60" LX6090, and may give it to me once the new Samsung 64ES8000 LED television becomes available at John Lewis. Then, she may give me her LX6090! Yet, I won't actually use it, partly because I notice that my Samsung TV seems sharper than my 50" Pioneer, so I assume that the 60" Pioneer will be similar. I'll sell the 60" Pioneer and use the money towards a Panasonic TX-P65ST50, which will go into the parlour and my present Samsung will go from the parlour to the kitchen. The LX5090 will go into my second bedroom (it's too big for my own bedroom), I'll still keep it because its black level, which is still very competitive among all televisions.

I don't suppose that there is any chance of your wife allowing you to move the 508 Kuro to the bedroom and selling the 32" Samsung instead ....? Of course, you probably won't get much for the Samsung, but that would mean your having TWO (very good) Japanese sets, which should keep Mrs BBB happy ... and no, a 50" set is NOT too big for the bedroom. That would enable you to compare your new Panasonic 50GT50 with the Pioneer 508 at your leisure. You would also remain a member of the exclusive and desirable Pioneer Kuro club!

I would've liked to have done that, but the Kuro is far too big for the bedroom. The wall where the tv is is only a metre past the end of the bed, and because of built in wardrobes, it's the only wall the tv can go in front of.

Also, I was spending money that was earmarked for other things, so I need to recoup some money.

It's a shame, but my membership of the Kuro club will soon be ending.

Just found out that the 65VT50 has landed in Saudi and available for SR17,400 (GBP2,900). Seriously tempted. The Kuro just will not fit in my bedroom (believe me I've tried) so will have to be "loaned" to my 15 year old son to be generally abused for gaming and bluray. I am sure that I asked your advice before regarding gaming and was told that the KURO would handle it. Sons 42" Panasonic to be moved to my bedroom and current Panasonic 32" now redundant.

Now, here's the rub fellow enthusiasts, absolutely no real chance of demoing (is that a word?) this set. Probably no problem viewing one, just with the language barrier and genuine lack of shop expertise I will be effectively buying cold with only the shop set up as a guide.

So my question is this: Is this the closest we'll come to at this size to at least equal the mighty KURO? If the answer is yes then I shall buy, fit and enjoy. If the answer is no then I'll have to rethink.

The major reason for looking to increase the screen size is that I now sit 4.8m away from the TV as opposed to 2.5 - 3.0m before and I'm finding I'm less "immersed".

Your views and any one with experience of this set would be appreciated.

Thanks.
