I agree with Gray here. I was in on the blind testing and there was little to naff all difference between a stage costing £150 and one costing £600. I've still got one to sell as I'm more than happy with the stage in my Marantz 🙂
Yeah. When I first wanted to upgrade from a built in, I listened to Rega Fono MM and Pro-ject SB3. The Rega was marginally better than both Pro-ject and built in but by not much at all. The Simaudio Moon 110LP I heard later was the only one that pulled away quite clearly from the rest..

To be honest I'm done with buying any more boxes for my system. It sounds great as is... my upgraditis has been cured completely.

In sympathy, yes; but I've also been satisfied with my loved sound for years, always knowing that there will always be (entertaining) manufacturers' and magazines' and threads' claims.

Plus, I note that the OP is reportedly already beyond ! ecstaticity! What could be next?

Entertaining 😉from a mere 4-dimensional guy

All that money spent, yet he still has his turntable positioned right in the firing line of the speakers...
I ached with a similar conundrum myself when I repositioned my speakers at the end of the room. The turntable is kinda in the firing line - about 1m+ to the right of my listening chair - it's in a chimney breast alcove, the speakers are toed in slightly and I have a panel resting against the wall at first reflection point but the concern is always there... Sounds good enough but🙃

I'd rank the most noticeable difference in sound when making changes to an audio system as follows, first to last:

Adding a sub, room/acoustics, speakers, phono cart, source (turntable), amplifiers (tube/ss), phono input/preamps, DAC, then cables. I'm probably missing something.

Caveats: Didn't include signal processors as they obviously alter the sonic signature by design. Also just speaking generally based on the OPs thoughts. I get that a new DAC can make a huge difference over an older 16/44khz converter...but not so much difference between a new $300 DAC vs a new $800 one. So the leap from good to better is much less noticeable than from bad to good, imo. Another example is poor cables which can completely ruin a system...whereas upgrading from good cables to "better" isn't going to knock your socks off.

Curious if anyone would rearrange the order or add anything...but for me, I'd probably place the external phono stage on the backburner if you could upgrade elsewhere first....or better yet, buy it and return it if it doesn't beat your marantz. Curious to hear the results if you do....good luck.

Correct phono stage can make or break a system. You are dealing with a Tiny Signal Thousands of a volt
LOMC 0.2 mV will need massive amounts of gain 70 dB over 1000% and once information is lost , it is lost forever

Perhaps, but the OP isn't talking about LO MC cartridges.
And, using what he has, he'd be hard pushed to differentiate between the internal one and any external phono stage.
