I am looking to buy a tv for my new rented house i'll be moving into in January so no rush to buy. I'll also be getting the B and W 685 theatre and Pioneer vsx920

Ideally i'd like to spend under a grand for the tv but would consider up to 1500 very max.

Aesthetics is very important, i want it to look good, i'm not fussed about 3D or Nettv etc. I'll be hooking it up to my PC, playing occasional games on PS3, largely watching Sky HD (work for Sky) and films.

Not sure on what size?, our rented house will most likely be a 4x4 metre terrace?, 2-3 metres from screen. I've been considering the Philips 9664 (42inch at £799, 47 inch at £999) or the 9704 (40 inch at £1100, maybe this could come down, shall i wait?). or the Samsung UEc8000 40inch?

Any advice or idea's would be greatly appreciated,

Many thanks.

Gary

Main issue is if you want matte or reflective screen. If priority on gaiming and HD TV, a 7605 with matte screen will do very fine. Note that LCD TV using the new Sharp UV2A panel technology ( Sharp, some Sony, most Philips ) have better performance on black level, gray scale, contrast ( native 5000:1 ) and panel speed.

Thank you Peter.

Mainly HD tv definately and films, some pc use, not much gaming. So im unsure on reflective or matte. matte from your suggestion, does this take out samsung form the equation?. I quite like the idea of ambilight i must admit. It is alot of money for me i have been saving alot, hence why i must make the best decision i can.

I think if you want the best TV out there with ambilight the 40" or 46" PFL9705 will do you fine! its a fantastic TV with 3 sided ambilight!

The picture quality, black levels and movement are on par with plasma TV's and that's the reason of my choice for this set and I want ambilight also because its so immersive and beautiful to watch!

Don't count on it for its 3D though there are a few issues with the 3D at the moment, but if you just want the best 2D tv you wont go far wrong with the 9705 and its got a matte screen also :) an is packed full of features like a full internet browser, wifi etc....

The 46PFL9705 will set you back £2300 and the smaller 40PFL9705 is around £1700 but is slowly coming down but well worth the money :)

If you want a beautiful designed TV taking the looks from apple then the 40PFL8605 can be had for £1300 but its screen is reflective like most TV's today but still has the amibilight just 2 sided and the option of 3D if you decide later you want it.

Hope that helps!
