I've checked out both of these plasmas and they are comparible in price. The pana boasts I much higher contrast ratio, without being able to compare them side by side should I be swayed by this? I'll be using the screen mostly for upscaled dvd and xbox 360. I'm holding out for a price drop at the moment as new models have been introduced, not sure if it has bottomed out around 1k.

Hi there,

I am have the same problem, I'm leaning towards the Pana but would appreciate any advice from the forum users, I've seen this screen going for £960 on Digital Direct complete with the Pana cabinent or <£800 with a wall bracket which seems good value to me.

I'll be using it for TV (probably SKY HD), DVDs upscaled and I also have a PS3 so hope to take advantage of some nice Blu-Ray action!

Any advice appreciated!

I take you mean the Pioneer PDP4270XD?

Both have great pictures but the sound on the Pioneer is marginally better and don't forget it only has 1 HDMI so you will need an HDMI switching box like one made by QED to allow for SKHDTV, Upscaling DVD/Blue Ray Player and/or PS3.

The Pioneer is better looking and has less refelction problems but the panasonic claims over x3 the contrast ratio. I'm not sure I can actually spot the difference. I'm looking at getting an AV receiver so the single HDMI port isn't a big issue.

The Pioneer may be marginally better looking but the Pansaonic TH42PX70 has, in my opinion, much better black levels. To get even better black levels than the Pansonic you're looking at the new breed of Pioneers, like the 4280XD at £700 more expensive

I know this could be like throwing a spanner in the works but have you thought about the Samsung PS42Q97HDX? I too am looking for a plasma and this model is getting very good reviews all over. I have seen both the Sams and Pana together and there is not much differences between them. The samsung is slightly better equiped with an 3x HDMI connection and some anti relection gadgetary business going on and it definitely appeals to the eye alot better than the other Samsung models. But history and rep is not on its side which makes me worry. Previously i wouldn't entertain Sam models at any level but this has been been mention more tham a few times all shouting it praises so i hasd to look. The Pana howvever is pulling me more towards it. Mainly because of rep, previous experiences with Pana equipment and confidence that it is quality and not just quantity I'm buying. The Pana is more expensive than the Sam by about £100 but there are some great deals online with both under £800. For me, i watch more SD broacasts than HD at the mo ( i can only watch SD since i don't anything HD as yet) and it's important that i get good viewing on SD. Both do very well on SD Broadcasts but the Sam slighty shades it as the image seems that little bit more sharper and clearer. ( Note This is the only Samsung model that like this. All others are not worth mentioning unless LCD, but then you be looking at another make). The Black on the Pana cannot be touched though. deep, precise, no grey where there should be black and no graduation lines - Perfect. which makes my choice harder to make .
Pioneers are the best looking screens ever and definitely Shear class and quality, However, they are very expensive which I could handle if it weren't for the complaints about screenburn. I read and seen more than my fair share on this subject on Pioneers more than any other plasma ( on the same level). Screen burn is a major worry for me, even though Plasma's has got alot better but they are still suffering form screen burn. Which brings me to my question.

How does the Pana TH42PX70 and Samsung PS42Q97HDX cope with Screen burn?

Well, I bought a Pioneer PDP-4270XD at Christmas and then I bought my sister a PDP-427XD in the Spring.

The difference between the two is that the 4270 model is slightly de-specified. It has no PC input and only 1 instead of 2 HDMI sockets. The 427 model is the one I'd go for.

I thought it was a thoroughly fantastic screen. But without a PC input, the 4270 began to really nark and so i gave it to my parents (replacing a 25 year old box) and they love it. No need for a PC input and 1 HDMI will be plenty.

I then bought a Samsung PS50Q97HDX because, I'm sorry but 42 inches just isn't enough. You get used to it before you know it and it starts to just look, well, normal after a while. 50 inches is far more cinematic. Now the Samsung is great but the step up in size brings it's own problems. You notice all the flaws in the image far more and the video processing takes longer so you start to notice lip synch issues. Also channel changing on the built in Freeview tuner is mind blowingly dreadful. Slooooooooooooooow.

But at £1080 incl. delivery, who am I to grumble. PRC Direct and very nice on the phone they were to.

More isn't always best and albeit with the Pioneers being great TV's, that's not say that they quite simply outshine either the Panasonic or indeed the Samsung models mentioned above.

You can buy a Pioneer 428XD for around £1,600.00, the Pansaonic 42THPX70 for £768 and that Samsung PS420Q97HDX close on their heels, for a ridiculous price around £695. Now........is the difference between first and last so wide that the Pioneer takes precedence. In my opinion no......essentially you pay for the priviledge of owning that Pioneer logo at the bottom of the Screen whereas Sam Sung by comparison may well sound a bit like your local take away albeit the food is still quite simply, delicious!

If I had the money to burn, I would go out and but a Pioneer PDP428XD just to say " Look I have a Pioneer Plasma TV' . However, as I don't I next have to consider a suitable alternative in terms of sheer value for money, and also the fact that in any case the Pioneer is not streaks ahead of either of the other two models when it comes to picture quality.

Therefore right now my only dilemma is to decide between the Panny or visiting my local take away and in my view the Panny come out on top especially too as you can get for less than £800..........Why spend twice as much I ask myself for a Pioneer.......No need............Job done. My local Panasonic shop is selling the Panny for £1,049 which I'm not prepared, but armed with enough information now on the model, courtesy of the shop, having seen it in action with both SD and HDTV and suitably impressed with it's Nicam Sound levels.......It's the one I've decided to go for.

Just have to tell the wife now

This is why PS42Q version gets a great review as it doesn't suffer the same probs introduced by stepping up to the PS50". That's when you are definitely looking at Pio's or Panny's. But sticking with the 42"s I have to agree that with ' TallyHo' about 'Logo's. Especially in this case. Get a Pio or Panny and you know you are getting quality and a top class set. Samsung - a little way down the list but they have moved up with PS42Q. If the rest of their models was on par as the PS42Q then they may be on the same level as Pio or Panny but at least they are on the same pitch now. All 3 42"s give great performances with very little between them except when it comes to price. The biggest jump being between the Panny and Pio - £400-600+ and the Sam is £100 lower than Panny
I Can't Justify the extra for the Pio for which i think is no better than the Panny or Sam 42"s. One thing i have notice reading these reviews, it's nearly aways Panny vs 'whoever'. Which make me lean more towards the Panny as it seems it's peoples first choice and that it being compared to rather than with.
This is what i think:
If Fantastic looks, Quality and a fat budget is you, then Pio or Panny
If Great looks, Quality, Quantity and not so fat budget is you, then Panny or Sam

The 50ins Samsung is a nice TV and granted....it does give a cinematic experience as you say.....but also as you say, given it's size there are noticeble picture problems, not least, with Standard Definition TV. If a lot of your TV Diet is made up of viewing SD then you will have lots of visits to the optician over the course of owning it. If however most of watch you will be watching will be SKYHD, Upscaling DVDs and/or Blu Ray then yes, I have to agree the Samsung is great also given it's current price too, but then there's also the Pansonic TH50PX70 to consider too for around the same price level right now and Panasonics are more renowned for their capabilities is upscaliing SD better than most TV's, though I have to say once again at 50ins SD can look quite ropey and noisy on such a big screen

The Panasonic boasts a contrast ratio of 10000:1. What you need to be careful of is checking to see if this is Dynamic or not. You get two types of contrast ratio, Panel and Dynamic. What it basically means is that the companies who use Dynamic ratio grading are using "there own version" of contrast ratio and by no means a exact ratio. Samsung are the main culprits for this I have found. The best way to decide is to get yourself down to a specialist shop and see the TVs set up properly and make your decision then. I went into Sevenoaks and looked at the Pana TH42PX70 Plasma and the Samsung M87 LCD. The Samsung could not handle the King Kong DVD that was playing and everyone on screen looked as though they had an inch of water around them. Whereas the Pana was perfect. Colour just right with no blur, amazing. My recommendation though? Wait another year and see what is about then. Probably a better TV and 5-10% off what the price is now. You will kick yourself if you buy now.
