I am going to purchase a Yamaha 763 or 863 very soon.

The issue I have is wether to buy Kef 2005.3 speakers (£700) or older, heavily discounted technology, such as Quad Lites 5.1 (£545) or something else.

Any advice would be great.

IMHO you are comparing chalk and cheese. ÿThe Kefs, though excellent, are a 'style' package, whereas the Quad L-ites were originally over £1000 and the fronts, at least, need stand mounting. ÿIf you can accommodate them in your room, I'm sure they will sound great with one of the new Yamaha receivers.

I have a Yamaha 3800 + Quad 12L2s and the Quad L-ite package in a 7.1 configuration and they sound awesome IMHO.

Yeah depending on room size go for the Quads I've got them and their awesome for the money, i auditioned the Kefs when they first came out and found them a bit bright, improved sub over the older 2005's but not as good as the Quad. Also you can upgrade the Quads using the larger range to floorstanders and then use the fronts for a 7.1. Add the Yamaha 863se and you wont be dissapointed.

Thanks guys. I think I have finally decided on my speakers.

However, I had a look at a Sony STR-DG820 today and it looked exceptional value for money compared to the Yamaha receivers. Any comments anyone?

I've only read the reviews, but it seems like the Sony punches above its weight at the 'budget' end of the market, whereas the Yamahas are in another class if you can afford them. ÿAgain, depending on your room size, the extra power would give you more headroom with the Quads, which are a 6 ohm load.
