Hi CnE

A graphic equalizer? Just in case :)

All the best

Rick @ Musicraft

....and if he doesn't go with the C2s it will be equally effective with the SCM 40s. ;)

Hi CnE

Sorry. It should have been - A graphic equalizer or cables? ;)

Btw, I'll choose the first option

All the best

That all sounds like a splendid plan, and gives you the best chance of making the correct decision.

Don't forget to report in with the final outcome.

Well I popped into seven oaks today and had a realy good dem of some B&W cm8s to start with realy good mid and top end bass a little loose but none the less a good speaker for the money I may see if I can dem the cm9s next up Kef r500 well what can I say after the first track I was almost sold all of the sound seemed to be comming from everywhere but the speakers and when turned up things got even better you could feel the bass we listened to rush clockwork angles rodger chapmans hyenas only laugh for fun fleetwood mac the best of stevie wonder the best of lou reed perfect day children in need version pluss a kef classical demo disc the all round kef sound was well balanced I will be having a home dem of these speakers soon and the r700 I must say that all of you that recomended the kefs were right not only for my usual music but also they are a good all rounder I must say I am looking forward to the home dems. my next stop was martins I know I had not booked a dem and I turned up without warning they were not busy but they said that the euquipment / speakers would need at the very least 2 hour to warm up and that I shoul book a dem so I didn't get to listen to anything not to worry I will phone and book a dem :) :)

That is all good, and shows why it is necessary to check out all good alternatives.....so it will be interesting to see what you think of Spendor and Sonus Faber.

IMO Kef have done something pretty special with the R series. They manage to be fun, lively, detailed and musical with terrific bass, while working with all types of music.....just make sure you get the right model for the size of your room.

What source and amp did they use, or did you bring your own?

Hi Cno

they had an m6i and a caspian cdp so it was a very good indication of what to expect the session was very relaxed and nothing was to much trouble in fact they would have let me have the r500 over this week although I turned this down as there are still one or two speakers to listen to at the moment though the kefs are the front runners as you say it will depend on my room acoustics the r700 my be just a bit to big for my roon:cheers:

Perfect!

The R series produce fairly prodigious bass for their size, so it will be a matter of trying both in your room.....it also may depend on how loud you play your music. The bigger speaker could work well if you don't push the volume (and vica versa).

How did the dem room compare with yours, and would you want more bass/scale. I think the R700 is the sweetspot of the range, provided it doesn't overpower the room.

the dem room was about the same size as mine although they had a large curtain behind the speakers and they set the speakers a bit nearer to the wall than I would have as they are rear ported but they seemed to work well

Toyota man,

Did you actually manage to audition M6i with ProAc D18. I have been using this combo for nearly 2 years now and I must say it will be sometime before this combo will be changed. I listen to similar music like you.

If you cant get a demo, try youtube. Not the best sound quality but you can have a rough idea.

Hi all today I listened to the kef r700 which were better all round than the r500s adding to the already good bass sound stage they filled the room with music and just disappeared every disc I put on from old recordings to right upto date sounded just fantastic even when the volume was low the music still was full of life and at the other extreme well if you like your music to move you like you are there standing in the crowd feeling the music coming at you these speakers play all types of music with great finess rock folk pop metal prog rock classical jazz swing I will try to add a bit more detail in the near future as I now have them on a home loan and am at the moment listening to Pink Floyds A Momentary lapse of reason at about 20 to which is quite low on the volume quater to is normal and 5 to is quite loud these speakers are realy very good at low volumes you don't feel like your missing out the music is full of life and I don't feel the need to keep turning up the volume everything is there the sound just projects into the room without any effort as I said when I have had a chance to listen to a wider range of music I will try to paint a picture of what I have heard any way floyd have finished there set and now Rodger chapman is on stage catch you later

I'm glad you are getting on with them so well, and they may well be the ones for you....but if possible, you should still try and get a listen to the D18s, the Spendor A6s, SF Cremonas and possibly Vienna Acoustics, before committing.

Hi all I know it's been a while since I last posted on my speaker quest but. I thought it was time to tell the tale so here goes while I loved the kef r 500 & r700 the r700 didn't get the boss's green flag and I thought I would try some other speakers that you guys recommend I booked a couple of dems spender a6s and act scm 40s while I was waiting for the days to count down to dem day I happened to be on the bay and I put a bid on a pair of act scm 40s not very scientific I know. I was working down the road from the sellers home in Harlow arranged a dem he had a 500w per channel mf amp as soon as I heard these speakers I knew that I had made the right choice they gave a great image between and beyond the speakers the mid range is to di for and the bass is tight and goes down a very long way these speakers are easy to place which is a real bonus in my small room it has been great to listen to CDs that I've not heard in a long time hearing things that I hadn't noticed before , I can honestly say that I have not had any cd sound anything but very good either I don't have any bad recordings or the views of some that these speakers can make some recordings unlistenable is a bit misleading . So any one in the market for a 2k pair of speakers please do not be put off by the unlistenable myth go give em a dem you will not regret it even if you don't like em you will be a bit wiser :)

a totally warts and all presentation like ATC

Hi Cno

but without boom, bloom, gloom or bling. Listening to Lisa Gerrard's - In Exile, The Sea Whisperer, Yulunga (Spirit Dance), Space Weaver and Towards The Tower and SCM40's particularly with their studio Soft Dome mid range unit reveal Lisa Gerrad's stunning voice in a stable, powerful, controlled, uncoloured and natural manner. Even when playing Towards The Tower (7 minutes 50 seconds to 9 minutes 30 seconds) at high playback levels ATC's drive units maintain their composure which helps project Lisa Gerrard's voice with utter ease and with superb clarity :) Sheer bliss :)

http://www.atcloudspeakers.co.uk/studioDriveUnits.php

I feel SCM40 monitors are probably the finest VFM passive speakers currently available on the market regardless of price.

All the best

Rick @ Musicraft

Thx, I must check out those tracks.....the upside of ATC, is good recordings sound great, but it's a speaker that needs careful assessment, due to its studio monitor levels of accuracy, which isn't for everyone.

Lisa Gerard, Australia's finest musical export!

Make sure you check out "Return of the She King" from the new Dead Can Dance album Anastasis, serious goosebump material. On high rotation at my place over the last few months since it came out.
