Hi ,

i have a Musical Fidelity A3 amp & cd player but the M/A 14 speakers i would like too replace with something with a better sound.I have a wide taste in music & the only things i dont really like are classical or jazz.Cant really describ the sound i like butt can say what i dont like.Listened regulary to my friends Primare l30 amp, primare cd31 & Proac Studio 140's & although they get fantastic reviews & people seem to love them the music seems to controlled & lack any excitement. It just seems sterile to me & lacking in life.So what i'm probably saying is i like something with a bit of life, lots of detail & not too over controlling.i just want the music too flow.Maybe i'm askig a bit much from my M/F equipment but i'd be grateful for any assistance.

Any idea of budget?

For your amp/CDP combo and taste in music I'd say take a nosey at the Dali Lektor 2's.

Superb speakers and really suit Jazz well.

If you can stretch your budget a bit more then maybe take a look at the B&W CM5's or the M/A GR10's

With an amp like that, I'd be looking at speakers from the £1000 mark upwards. Neat, Spendor, Wilson Benesch or similar. The Lektors would be outclassed by the amp, as you'd expect given the price differential.

I'll beat Rick to this and suggest listeing to some ATC's also. I'm not sure you will like Spendors, as they won't immediately get your juices flowing and can sound very average on first impression. As ever though, go and listen to as many pairs as you can as speakers are the hardest part of the system to *match* your ears preference.

Yes, my first thought was ATC, but the A3 isn't the most powerful of amps and the output is below the ATC recommendations. However, I know the Musicraft dealer disagrees about the relative power hungriness of ATC, so listening is a good idea as you say.

Your A3 will drive the ATC's fine - MF has always had a fairly decent current behind them, so don't worry about that.

It is still a little hard to work out what sound you like or don't like, but if you're not keen on the Proacs, I'm not too sure you're going to like speakers from ATC and Wilson Benesch as they all produce a 'similar' type of sound. I'm not saying they sound the same, but they are aiming for the same thing. I'm assuming you don't want to go to the opposite - an overly warm, soft dull sort of sound. If you don't like those above, try the Spendor A6's, PMC GB1i or FB1i, and even though you don't like the Studio 140's, try the Response D18's. I'm not a fan of Proac on Primare, so this may be the reason for you not liking them.

A3 are best match with smooth sounding pair of speakers. As for power output, like Frank said, you wouldn't have to worry about it run out of steam, I use to crank my up so loud with Acoustic Energy AE1 Mk2 without any sign of close-in.

Spendor are properly the best bet but Adam speakers will also be a good match too.
