hello folks i currently have a philips 32 inch pixel plus crt tv a best buy of its day(5 years ago)

this is in tandem with a panasonic home theatre again a best buy.

now i know things have come on loads and i am thinking shall i make the move?

my picture is great and dvd is also very good , from reading some of the posts on here it looks like i might not gain a better picture with a new set up?

i was thinking a 37 inch (the sony 37w5500 or even a plasma panasonic) and a hd home theatre which also up scales.

also any thoughts plasma v lcd?

i have virgin plus.

any thoughts please.

I have a 37" Samsung LCD and I think the picture is excellent. A modern TV with HD images should blow the CRT out of the water!

I have Virgin V+ and this also provides excellent picture quality as do DVDs.

As for LCD vs Plasma there are many debates about them. I think there is little difference really.

Just try and demo some and see what you think....

Crucial point - if you're not looking at any HD sources any time soon (e.g. Blu-Ray, Sky HD, HD gaming etc.), you'll struggle to find a flat screen which will outperform a decent CRT for SD images. As the blessed one says though, demoing is key before you decide.

Hi gypsyboy. I had a Philips 32" CRT of the same vintage, which I thought was brilliant. In the end it had to go after a house move where there was a built in space for a flat screen TV. So I got a Sony Bravia KDL32S300 LCD from amazon based on the excellent customer reviews it had there. The picture and sound quality is slightly better with the Sony IMO, but not worth it unless you really need to change (I suspect the Sony has now been upgraded).

I recently helped a friend upgrade a faulty Panasonic 32" CRT to a Sony KDLsomething 40" LCD. That was a big improvement in picture and sound quality and I mean from the fully functioning Panasonic, not when it was faulty. But if you are going to make the change one area you will see a benefit is connectivity particularly with the likes of HDMI.

True. But don't let that put you off as I find that SD images are still pretty good.

Hi, I have exactly the same set-up so will follow suggestions with interest. Agree still a very good picture with standard def comes close to plasma though not upto HD in either plasma or LCD. Also no HDMI or component input.

Just one point - this Philips set is a monster - it took two of us to set it up back in 2002 so what do I do with it if replacing it?

Gave mine to a friend. There's also Freecycle.

That is one thing I won't miss on my Panny 32" CRT and that's lugging it in and out of the house when you move - flat screens score a big point here!

I was in the same dilema as you and opted for the TXL-37V10 because I wanted the best picture possible from a 37" set. Provided you have a strong input signal (Freeview or Freesat) you will be blown away with the picture quality. In particular cranking up the contrast makes watching so many SD (Standard Definitions) programs a joy. Last night I was watching Coast, it was completely amazing seeing the sun shining through behind black clouds. HD Freesat just raises the bar even further.

I didn't go for the Sony due to sony not being able to support the same contrast ratio in their 37" v's 32 and 40. The V10 is 100,000:1 v's Sony's 50:000 and I believe that contrast is one of the most important aspects of a TV Picture.

I'd really be surprised if anyone beleived the W5500 was a better picture than the V10, but I'm just so chuffed to bits with the V10 that I wouldn't care anyhow. It is a massive price jump between W5500 and V10 (about 300 quid). Personally for me its worth it.
