New Blu or new TV?

I have a 50" HD-ready plasma TV, (Samsung PS50Q97HDX) and Panasonic '35 Blu-ray player. I'm quite happy with the picture quality, (and via my Yamaha RX-V3800 amp and Monitor Audio Gold Reference 5.1 speakers I'm very happy with the audio).

The thing is, I'm suffering from an episode of upgrade-itis. Is it possible to achieve a significant leap in picture quality by changing the TV to a full-HD set, or alternatively changing the Blu-ray player to a more accomplished unit? Budget between £500 and £1,000, approximately, (happy to go lower to achieve goal, prepared to spend more if absolutely necessary).

Many thanks.

I vote full HD - at 50" you will notice a significant improvement on Bluray.

I would be tempted to say neither.

buy more discs.

Im to much of a purist

try and find a 50" Full HD in his price range?

the 35 is a very good BD player and will be fine for just about any TV. yes there are ones that cost more but with the current TV are they needed.

IF i was going to do anything i would find more money for a VERY good TV.

This looks perfect to me.

Thanks for your replies, guys.

So, the concensus is to change the TV. Interesting; I thought some people might say that the likes of the Pioneer '51 or Denon 2500 Blu-ray players might be the answer.

TBH. I'd say hold off and resist the upgrade-itis! Why bin a perfectly good TV? I too have Blu-Ray playing through a HD Ready TV, and don't get me wrong, I'd love full HD, 24fps, etc, etc, but not enough to take a bath on the old set.

Bank the money and wait until your TV goes to the great repair shop in the sky, then go for the new TV. That's what I'm gonna do. Same for the Blu-ray. Although I guess you could always re-use the Blu-ray you have in a different room in your home. A 50" TV much less likely!

Agree with big chris, keep the TV however if you cant keep your money either of the players you have stated would give you a step up in PQ,and i dont think you would be disapointed THEN later if you do decide to change your set for what ever reason, you would not have to upgrade the Blu-ray player.

Thanks for your view, Big Chris. I managed some time back to place a 32" LCD TV in another room, but She Who Must Be Obeyed will not let me find a place for a 50" TV outside of the main viewing room!

Maybe I'll see if I can demo another Blu-ray player to see if there's a worthwhile discernible difference over my Panasonic '35. If not, I'll go see my doctor regarding my upgrade-itis!

I have the same TV as you. Bought it after WHFSV's 5* rating back in Summer 2006 I think it was. Or was it Summer 2007. Oh well, a lifetime ago!

It works well and the only downside of moving up a notch is how expensive the screens really worth buying have become. In all honesty, I'd either go budget (like Samsung) or high end, which really means Pioneer. And they're out of my range right now!

I like the Pioneer BDP-51FD but I'm not sure it's enough of a leap over your current deck that it's worth binning what you have. Why not enjoy what is in fact a fantastic screen and invest in a few more disks! After all, until the price of big plasmas come down, you'd be throwing away a really nice TV.

(The projector idea is the one to really chase! A nice JVC and 96inch screen Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Yum Yum)

I would wait and see what new models, Panasonic are bringing out first.Upgrading the tv would be my choice, and the Denon certainly seems to be one of the best now it's at £599, but also looking at the Pioneer for £299 at RS seems a great price. So if your unhappy with your tv change that, if not by changing your player you will definetly be able to improve the sound quality and probably a slight improvement with pq. But at this time awaiting game is your safest bet, as we are all waiting for the first new releases of the year to arrive.
