Hello all,

I have this wonderful pair of speakers called AVI Neutron 5. So balanced and clear, they just play music and dont add anything - i love them. But - im now discovering they are useless for pretty much all the amplifiers that im considering upgrading to ! AVI recommends an amp between 30-100w and as im now keen on valve amps and t class amps all seemingly rated between 10-15w it is quite frankly a disaster. Is there any solution to this ? Could these amps be used with my Neutrons ? I have a small listening room and only listen at lowish levels.

It depends on the efficiency of speakers rather than the recommended power. If you don't listen to music with loads of bass (rap or organ music for example), you won't need so much power as it is the bass that uses the power.

If there are twin terminals on the speakers, you could always biamp!

Here are the only specs i can find for my speakers -

Size H X W X D 265 x 140 x 205mm
Bass Drive Unit 125mm doped paper 25mm voice coil
Tweeter 25mm doped silk composite
Crossover 12dB/Octave Linkwitz-Riley

Sensitivity 87.5dB/W/M
Amplitude response +or- 2dB 100Hz to 23kHz
Bass response -6dB @ 65Hz
Amplifier range 30-150 Watts

Finish Black piano lacquer

Sadly, they dont have twin terminals either !

This is the figure u r looking 4

Sensitivity

87.5dB/W/M

This is reasonable (most speakers are in 85 to 90 range) 3db doubles the power. So your speakers will need twice as much power for the same loudness as speakers with 90.5db.

I guess from the frequency/amplitude response that you've not got much deep bass anyway!

why not give it a go!

You could try them on some valve amps to see how it goes. The impedance curve is important too because any awkward loading at certain frequencies could result in an imbalanced sound from a valve amp.

As discussed before, the sensitivity and distance sat away from them is key to the overall volume you get so it might not be a huge problem. Just avoid SET amps! The impedance curve is important as it depicts the amp loading at different frequencies and how much current is drawn.

Yes, i had a few doubts about my speakers and low powered amps, but it seems many people use them with 87-88db speakers with no problems. I have infact just bought a KingRex T20U Amplifier (http://www.itemaudio.co.uk/kingrex_t20u.html) which is rated about 20w, so lets see what happens. This is one of those "Class T" amps that are around at the moment, plenty of good reviews -

Anyone else tried a Class T ?

Apologies to MODS for error on my part with the URLs. Sorry.

So i have my KingRex amp and im pleased. A good all round sound. No issues with my speakers whatsoever, even though the amp is rated only 13-20w. Surprised these Class Ts arent more popular and not even mentioned within the pages of WHFSAV. Do a search online for the KingRex T20 and you will see what the fuss is about.
