Should there be a ball bearing at the bottom of the well where the spindle sits?I’d return it! Did you buy it non working?
It’s ancient now, though a lovely design, but maybe there’s a ball bearing missing from the bearing sleeve? Is the platter at the right height?

Yes, normaly wolframcarbid steel ball must be below spindle. And several drops of high quality oil. After many years of use, it is good to make precise cleaning of the bearing hole. Than it shall work.Should there be a ball bearing at the bottom of the well where the spindle sits?
