I have been looking at some good deals on older Luxman amps. Some people on this forum seem to really like them, but where I live, they are mostly regarded as gimmicky, not very reliable and nearly impossible to have repaired. Which makes me wonder: are the different models of such diverse quality? And if so, what are the models to go for?

I'm not very knowledgeable, but it depends on the age. They were legendary amps, but in the 80's (I think) they got bought out and became "mid-fi". Fairly low grade products being sold cheaply and in bulk. Not sure when they got back into the serious side of the game (I've seen articles on the net) but they are now making great products again.

My dad has one from the mid 70's and it is still going strong. Nothing major has ever gone wrong with it, and he gets it cleaned and serviced very occasionally by someone who does general hi-fi repairs.

A very smooth musical sound that drives his speakers effortlessly. Now if only he could be persuaded to upgrade the speakers and CDP to something appropriate for the amp...
