I have spent months in this forum trying to find the best 37 inch tv and it always seems to come down to the px80 in the end. I only have some concerns with the sky sd as has been expressed in some threads so my question is:

Would the pq on a 37px80 be any better from a standard sky box if it was upsacled by something like a pany bd35? I don't even know if it could do this. Also, dfo any of these upscalers have the ability to record? Sky HD at moment is £159 for box and fitting as upgrade but 120 a year for hd subscpription. I only get 4 channel mix too so limited hd channels available. Question is, will it be better in long run to get sky hd to have hdmi connection, full recoding and hd content OR get some kind of upscaler so potentially the sd sky looks better and can still potentially record?

HELP -

Hi Chris

The PX80 is a great choice for all-round viewing. ÿI - like many others, but not everyone on here - think that plasma produces a more natural picture and is a better choice for sport, in particular. ÿI also think that the PQ on SD TV is better on an HD ready set like the PX80, rather than one of the Sony LCD panels, for example (great for blu-ray).

Unfortunately, you cannot upscale SD via a blu-ray player. ÿUpgrading to Sky+HD and using an HDMI feed WOULD improve your picture significantly. ÿYou would also get the HD mix of channels, which is getting better. ÿSky+HD looks great on an HD ready set like the PX80. ÿI must admit that Sky Sport HD was probably my main reason for going down the HD route, but I also now look at the HD channels first when deciding what to watch! ÿMany of the big new dramas on the BBC are now in HD. ÿWallace & Gromit in HD yesterday was unbelievably good.

To upscale the SKY SD signal you would have to buy an AV amp which are not cheap. Better off spending the money on SKY HD and you get a recorder plus an even better picture in HD.

do you have a px80, if so which one. I have seen the recommended viewing distance on here but it conflict with other sites. I will be siting 9-11ft away depending on seat but don't want to get the noise associated with sitting to near to sd sources. Any advice or experience regading this?

My Onkyo 875 AV amp upscales everything put through it to full HD and gives a superb picture to my 46" Samsung. Would not swap it for a plasma as it is excellent on everything.

I don't watch sports so get all I need off freeview plus 4 Blue rays a month form Love films. Have a Sony 960 DVR for recording onto.

We all have different requirements so it's a matter of deciding which is the right route for you to take.

Plasmas are said to have a shorter life, but are easier to set up straight out of the box, the best give excellent viewing, screen burn can be an issue apparently.
Don't care much for most LCD's but the best of the crop are spot on.
Our family love to view our libary of digital pictures on the TV so Plasma was never a serious consideration for us to buy, but getting plasma quality of picture was!

Any advice or experience regading this?I have the 37PX80 and I used to sit 7 to 8ft away. After a recent room decoration/rearrangement I am now 6ft away and loving it. I have Virgin V+ box and the majority of SD channels are very good and HD is excellent, There are always poor SD ones though (Dave, ITV football..). 10ft away from a 42" is absolutely no problem.
