How was the demo?

Quite rushed really, i wasn't that impressed, waited over twenty minutes to be seen by the time i left the shutters had come down and the door was locked, i was the last customer, i managed to get the Denon AVR-X2200W for £450 which i thought was a bargain, could be a few weeks before i get it up and running though as i need to get a new light fitting made for the atmos speakers.

Bear in mind you haven't demoed the receiver properly, and you're not going to check it for the next few weeks. So you'll go outside the returns period and therefore be stuck with it regardless of whether you like it or not.

I've had great unhurried demos before at my local Richer Sounds, but booked in advance. They even hooked up speakers I'd purchased at another shop to demo their amp and CD player. They got me a coffee and left me to it. I could have been there for hours and they wouldn't have minded.

They're a very busy store indeed with a very wide product range so (in general, no comment about Simon's experience) I think it's not really fair to turn up unannounced on a Saturday and expect undivided attention and a full AV receiver demo. The detail of the set-up on an AVR can influence the sound and overall impression much more than a straight 2-channel system, so can be tricky to ask for a demo on a specific AVR, particularly if they don't have that model already set-up.

Opposite my local Richers is a more specialist hifi store. Both stores are helpful and accommodating but Richers has significantly more punters walking through the door. So the hifi shop is much better placed to do demos without pre-booking them. But demos are important enough to get right, so patience and talking through your needs / wants beforehand is good form IMO.

I think the demo was with a yamaha amp which they allready had connected up, not sure which one but i think it was top end and this was about three-four minutes before the shop was about to close it sounded alright but i didn't really hear the atmos speakers.

Surely to expect a good demo it should be pre-booked? No critisism meant but if I turned up then the quality of the demo would depend on how busy the shop was at the time. I must add that I have never attended a demo so more fool me.

I did see a demo of Panasonic (I think) at a HiFi show in 70's. The speakers were bigger than an American style freezer but sounded errrrrrm quite good! :)

all pretty standard nowadays - most store will let you bring in your own equipment, which is always the best thing to do if you have older, discontinued equipment.

Pre-booking demos makes sure everything is set up ready to go (including alternatives) beforehand.

Again, a pre-booked demo would mean you can listen to any AVR a store has on demo. At least that way you can decide if it is the right product for you/your speakers/your room. Using a different amplifier (especially a better one) will make the speakers sound much better than they actually will when purchased. Plus, only having a two channel demo isn't going to tell what the speakers will be like for movies.

RS sell more budget equipment than many specialist stores, so will have more people going through their doors.

My comment about the specialist hifi store's footfall wasn't meant to be derogatory in anyway, as it's a jolly good store, it's just that the sheer volume of people in Richers makes it harder for them to react to your needs for a demo if it's not been booked beforehand. The main point I was trying to make was really about what our realistic expectations should be as a customer. But even if the staff in Richers are busy I've been met with consistently knowledgeable and enthusiastic service, but if I'd asked for a demo when they're shop's full I wouldn't be surprised or upset if they recommended coming back another time and booking a demo. I've been a paying customer at that store for 15 years: staff have come and gone, but the quality of their service has remained high. They've at times persuaded me out of buying equipment when I was ready to hand over the cash, and that builds my respect.

I was in the hifi retailer the other day when the other customer walked in (total of 2 one of them being me) obviously without prior appointment and the spare member of staff offered him a demo there and then. They had the time and sufficient staff on hand, not a luxury their friends across the road have very often.

I take your point about Richers' target audience (in terms of price) - that's certainly valid, although having a decent demo is just as important with budget kit. It might be budget in the market as a whole, but each punter may view his 'budget' purchase as a considerable investment!

Dont worry, I didn't take it that way - just stating why it would be the case.

Calm down and have patience. People can take 2-3 days to respond. If they're busy, they must be good! ;)

Set it up yesterday afternoon with the help of a freind, so far quite impressed but i think it will get a bit of getting used to, i can cotrol it using my samsung galaxy tab s, so i had a little play controling the internet radio off the denon on the tablet which i quite liked, i was also a bit nervous that i wouldn't like the sound after being with the onkyo for 7-8 years but i had nothing to worry about, so fingers crossed now that i hear from avalon lighting for atmos speakers soon. *good*
