I thought it was great, but then I have an interest in capital punishment and penology. I'm guessing the Jesus stuff may have been a bit offputting for you. And that weird mouse.

To be honest, it was the shamelessly sentimental ending (complete with crying prison guard) that really bothered me.

I quite liked the mouse!

Heresy!

Good short story actually (I'm not much of a fan of King's writing for the most part), very different in tone from the film.

I definitely prefer The Running Man to The Green Mile. Climbing for Dollars is inevitable, in my view.

Make that Hollywood movie studios.

The studio era ended in the 1960s, though the studios' fate was sealed by the 1948 Paramount case. The "Hollywood" film industry today is at best an ostensibly American enterprise. There really isn't anything that could be accurately described as a "Hollywood studio," even if the facade of such an industry exists.

Fair enough, I'm sure you get my point though. There's plenty of non-**** films being made, you just need to get away from the mainstream.

I don't normally go in for such sentimental films, but I wouldn't reject a film just because it was sentimental. I can see why one would be turned off the film though.

I do; and excuse my pedantism.

There are definitely some non-**** films being made; and while I don't buy into the idea of a mainstream-independent cinema dichotomy (the former defined in terms of crass commercialism, the latter defined in terms of legitimate artistry and opposition), the great majority of major film productions released during the last decade have been depressingly bad.

Can I just interject with an idea I've had.

What do you guys think of having a film club on here?

Fair enough. It's a very personal thing. I felt too conscious of the filmmakers' efforts to manipulate me.

There are of course many valid reasons to become invested in a film, an interest in penology, as you mention, being such a reason in this case.

Have you seen 10 Rillington Place? Brilliant film involving a bit of capital punishment.

As in we all watch the same film, to be followed by debate?

Basically, yes. Though I haven't really thought about the details, but I suppose, one member of the club recommends a film for everyone to watch within a certain time period, then we all buy/rent it, then give our opinions.

Personally, I think it would be better to avoid blockbuster films, little known gems is what I'm thinking of.

How do you feel about Shawshank Redemption and Sleepers?

It's a shame it was demolished the same as 39 cromwell street, you would have thought it could have been turned into a museum ???

I have indeed. (I'd certainly watch 10 Rilling Place again ahead of The Green Mile.) Maybe a new thread on films depicting capital punishment is needed.

Let Him Have It, Dead Man Walking, Paths of Glory, and so on...

Feel free to start the ball rolling. I'd be happy to contribute and you don't need permission!

Well this thread was definitely worthwhile, I was not aware of Let Him Have It and will watch it soon. Paths of Glory is one of my favourite films and it staggers me that (last time I checked) there was no UK blu ray release of it. Almost a reason to buy a multi region oppo alone.

It's hard to dislike The Shawshank Redemption, though the "greatest film of all time" tag is overplayed. Believe it or not, I've never seen Sleepers.

We do need members, though not sure how many.

I was thinking no more than 6.

What would your selection criteria be? (Members, not films.)

Not sure. It's difficult to choose who can, and can't be a member without causing offence, so I suppose we should maybe ask for people who have an interest in arthouse and foreign language films.

What do you think?

Ben, would you be interested?

BenLaw said:
Incidentally, it was not the tenth film in the Rillington Place franchise.

No, that would be 10 Rillington Place, er 10... with Dickie as a Jason Vorhees type monster that keeps coming back, in a return of the repressed kind of way.

That's probably the only way to get things going. You'd need to start a WHF film club recruitment thread.

I think it's inevitable that some forumites will be offended. That's how clubs work, you're either in or you're excluded.

OK. Will start a thread later, I'll save a space for Ben if he wants to join, and I think I'll have a limit of 6 members.
