I thought it was great, but then I have an interest in capital punishment and penology. I'm guessing the Jesus stuff may have been a bit offputting for you. And that weird mouse.

To be honest, it was the shamelessly sentimental ending (complete with crying prison guard) that really bothered me.

Good short story actually (I'm not much of a fan of King's writing for the most part), very different in tone from the film.

I definitely prefer The Running Man to The Green Mile. Climbing for Dollars is inevitable, in my view.

The studio era ended in the 1960s, though the studios' fate was sealed by the 1948 Paramount case. The "Hollywood" film industry today is at best an ostensibly American enterprise. There really isn't anything that could be accurately described as a "Hollywood studio," even if the facade of such an industry exists.

Fair enough, I'm sure you get my point though. There's plenty of non-**** films being made, you just need to get away from the mainstream.

There are definitely some non-**** films being made; and while I don't buy into the idea of a mainstream-independent cinema dichotomy (the former defined in terms of crass commercialism, the latter defined in terms of legitimate artistry and opposition), the great majority of major film productions released during the last decade have been depressingly bad.

Basically, yes. Though I haven't really thought about the details, but I suppose, one member of the club recommends a film for everyone to watch within a certain time period, then we all buy/rent it, then give our opinions.

Personally, I think it would be better to avoid blockbuster films, little known gems is what I'm thinking of.

It's a shame it was demolished the same as 39 cromwell street, you would have thought it could have been turned into a museum ???

Well this thread was definitely worthwhile, I was not aware of Let Him Have It and will watch it soon. Paths of Glory is one of my favourite films and it staggers me that (last time I checked) there was no UK blu ray release of it. Almost a reason to buy a multi region oppo alone.

It's hard to dislike The Shawshank Redemption, though the "greatest film of all time" tag is overplayed. Believe it or not, I've never seen Sleepers.

I haven't seen the film for well over a decade. I'm guessing you're familiar with the Derek Bentley case.

I think it's inevitable that some forumites will be offended. That's how clubs work, you're either in or you're excluded.
