Is Marantz SR8001 enough to power B&W 703s as front speakers?

Hi,

I own a Marantz SR8001 (125 WPC ) and I'm thinking of upgrading my front speakers from the B&W 601 S3 to the 703s. I've heard the 703s are difficult to drive and picky about the electronics. Does my AV receiver have enough juice to power the 703s?

Since the SR8001 supports bi-amping and I've gotten really good results with the 601s, I will bi-amp the 703s. That should help drive them, right? Out of curiosity, does that technically push the overall amplification levels of the speaker to 250W (125 X 2)?

Thank you,

Mike

I would not do it.

I Bi amp mine with 2 x 150 Watt per channel (at 8 ohms) for my stereo set up.

Have a look at the new 600 floor standers. (sorry mot sure of the numbers).

Thanks. Do you think 2 X 150 is sufficient or would you recommend even more power, say 2 X 200 or 2 X 400? My biggest concern is that this kind of power for an AV Receiver does not come cheap - the cost of the 703s will be a fraction of the receiver... If I need to upgrade my receiver then I might just opt for a CM7 or 683/684. On the other hand, I'm not sure how much of an upgrade they would be over the 601.

I used Roksan, Yamaha 663 and Onkyo 875+876. They were all good. Of course more power is better but your amp will be sufficent imo.
