So, you have discovered that Apple is a business, not a charity, eh. Well so long as it produces products which are functionally superior (never mind also aesthetically superior) it will get my custom. Sure, I would like it to be cheaper. I would also like beer, malt whisky, Moulton bicycles and concert tickets to be cheaper, but.....

So hows the company making its money then? Im using an iPhone and Im happy. Is the price fair? If I have to ask that question it must be abt everything that I buy. Are people buying iphone at the current price? Yes they are. Are Iphone users feeling ripped off? I dont think so

It is however somewhat relevant to something I saw yesterday on Gumtree which I find a bit odd, iPhone 5 32GB is available with 2-3 weeks shipping for £599 from Apple on-line store but some joker called John is asking £750 for a "brand new sealed unit dispatched as soon as payment is received".

I guess he's counting on there being someone not willing to wait 2-3 weeks to get their hands on a shiny new iPhone, and thus willing to pay a premium to have one sooner.

Thats what I assumed also but cannot understand why anyone would want to take that risk for something that isn't exactly ground breaking nor unobtainable in a reasonable timescale. Add to that the chance that John may not actually have anything at all and just be a rip off merchant. If indeed someone takes John up on his kind offer it does sort of support the OP's opinion that some folk have more money than sense

This basically means that you think your AV equipment sold at cost and the manufacturers are working for United Nations or some non profit organisation.

No, if they were working for the United Nations it would probably be 3 times the cost.

Agreed, but then I guess there will always be a market for those willing to profiteer from punters willing to pay extra to have something sought-after before any of their friends. Hence the frantic pre-ordering of cars expected to have a long waiting-list, and the appearance of ads offering the chance to beat the wait in return for a premium.

Supply and demand, I guess – and of course the stories about the new phone's display/touchscreen being so thin and fiendishly tricky to make that supplies may be limited will do such speculative buying and selling no harm whatsoever.

Where has the OP disappeared to? She/He should at least try to defend oneself!....................

Show me any product that retails at cost

Nexus 7 & Kindle Fire 🙂

And famously the PS3.

This is no triumph of the non-foolish consumer tho, it's still economics just with a bit more at play than the headline price.
I doubt it. If its selling at cost its bcs the manufacturer will make a killing on you down the value chain. I dont think Sony is just killing time by making the PS3. There's nothing for free in this world.

Why? It's more fun to light the blue touch paper and retire.

At least the Nexus and Kindle Fire do not charge in pounds sterling what their dollar[us] price is. Not a reflection of £ to $ but at least I don't feel quite so ripped off.

Erm, that's what I said. It did retail for less than cost (they made a loss), which was your question. But, as I said, that's only for other reasons, that they plan to make more money from you down the line. With the playstation it was also done to win the HD format war.
