I am sure he tried to calibrate it for HDR
How? Using what source? It appears that UHD blu ray HDR have issues, and they've only just been launched.

I am pretty sure calman had some suggested HDR calibration info so using that and the correct test patterns - you dont need actual content just patterns.

However I dont know if the calibrator knew how the TV's would react to a HDR signal - i.e. maximum everything, but even if he did we are humans we learn from experience and get better and stuff with it :) Is all I was getting at - no criticism intended of anyone

Normal TV and blu Ray looks fine and calibration settings still there, it's just when I put the 4K blu Ray in, the settings all go high. I have tried inputting my settings for 4K HDR but the picture still looks no good.

not sure I really understand this. Why is HDR setting all the picture settings to max, is it compensating in another way as well. I wouldn't dream of setting all my picture settings to max, it would look awful, not to mention no doubt I would get screen burn! So is there actually much point to HDR?

I don't understand either, why should HDR (as opposed to normal 4K) be so disruptive? Anyway, anyone with a spare nine minutes can listen to this podcast, from two minutes in to ten minutes 50 seconds https://www.avforums.com/threads/avforums-podcast-30th-march-2016.2020519/.

No, I think it means that HDR metadata takes over the settings, it doesn't necessarily mean that all settings are at their maximum.

As Gel will verify that I often ask him - which thread and what page, exactly?

At the risk of putting my oar in and breaking the comedic flow of a thread almost as good as the chap who tried to vacuum out his plasma, perhaps when it detects an HDR signal the TV knows to set everything to max, and then the metadata adjusts it down from that according to the content. Then presumably when it no longer detects an HDR signal it goes back to the default (ie previously calibrated) settings.

Anyway, later tonight on Comedy Central...

sounds like a plausable answer....

I'm going to concentrate improving my atmos sound and prepare for dts X and invest in this area first and hopefully HDR will be sorted in a couple of years..

I think you should 100% make sure you are using a hdcp 2.2 compliant hdmi socket on the TV obviously

If your not the player down convert to 1080p automatically. Have you done this?
