Humming ,buzzing Brio r

I have a 2 month old Brio R and have heard no humming whatsoever and very pleased with the sound!

Regarding input 2, this must be feature as when I turn mine on it switches to the last input used which is input from my DAC

Humming, buzzing through the speakers is just part of the Brio-R package,I'm afraid. The more sensitive your speakers the worse it will probably be. It sounds like I've got a wasps nest inside my MA RX1's with the Brio-R connected.

My Brio R does not and has never buzzed or hummed, I've even turned up the volume full (without any source) and can hear nothing. I really don't think it's acceptable to have it buzzing and if it were me I would get it changed especially as its a £500 amp!

Hi! Sizzers.

Are you still using the Brio-R? I notice you no longer have it on your signature. Given the fact that your replacement seemed to tick all the right boxes, it just piqued my curiosity. Please don't think me rude for asking.

Sadly not.

A series of very nasty circumstances forced it's sale, and equally sadly my "stop-gap" Alpha doesn't tick many boxes at all.

Have any of you guys considered running a di-magnatising tone through the amp. You can get it on those disc laser cleaners with set-up and diagnostic, it may be worth trying.

I was shocked at the response letter suggesting 'cheaper' brands don't hiss but 'quality' kit does, I'd have to tell the author of that letter to role that up and shove it were the sun don't shine as for the 'most speakers don't play 50hz'....hilarious

I took my Brio R back to the local dealer this weekend. The sales guy could hear something was wrong but seemed to be saying it wasn't too bad. He got their repair/tech guy to come have a look. He started messing with the volume among other things and I told him the volumed doesn't affect the buzz. He immediatly said "Bad power supply." They ordered a new one for me so I hope the new one works. But they both agreed that I had a bad unit.

I hope you get it sorted!

As previous posts have mentioned, it's the design, I don't buy it because my Brio R does not and has never buzzed or hummed but it has given me many hours of enjoyment.

Its a cracking little amp and I couldn't warrant the extra for a Nait 5i or Kandy when I auditioned it.

The Brio R is a cracking amp and if you get a good one it is a good buy. However, I personally think some of these humming issues are totally unacceptable on a £500 amp irrespective of whether even more expensive kit suffers in the same way. My £300 NAD doesn't hum or make any extraneous noise at all and, to be perfectly honest, the performance gap between it and the Rega is pretty tiny in my experience so I certainly wouldn't accept added noise for the extra £200. My advice to anyone suffering from these issues is to go back to the supplying dealer and insist on repair or replacement. Consumers shouldn't have to put up with these sorts of issues on expensive kit.

I totally agree, I'm afraid. I bought a Brio-R last year and enjoyed it but the buzz was a concern, though not noticeable to me from across the room.

Now sold and currently using the rather fine Caspian M2 - until (possibly) Naim upgrade their integrateds.

Jerry did you sell due to upgrade or because of the buzz?

Its such a good amp, I'm lucky and have a good one

I have the dac which I took back for a buzzing issue but the dealer tested for audio hum and this is not an audio hum, it's powerpack hum, I decided to live with it.

Now got the apollo-r and that hums too, both units in unison make a pretty loud hum.

The dac will now be out of warranty so I have left that too late I guess, but the apollo-r I have only had for two weeks or so, just love the sound of this kit but can't live with both of them humming, like opthers I like to leave the kit on 24/7.

Worthy of note is I have a brio 3 on the same mains and no hum what so ever, so it must be I think a problem with using smaller cases and the powerpacks untilised to make that possible.

It's a shame you can't phone rega direct as this would really be such a good thing, in my experience the dealers are never so great in sorting this kind of thing out.

NO buzzing on any my Rega gear.

If you look hard enough it's not difficult to get Regas number, they are very helpful and it's an unwritten given that they will honour warranty for life

That's a quick reply 🙂 thanks

I will look harder for the number, just had standard 50hz reply from dealer and pointed him to this thread and asked if he will speak to them.

As pointed out above it' not like it's cheap gear, although as we know it is excellent value for money, will keep you posted.

Tube amps have some hum and hiss. The brio is solid state but the circuit design of the Brio has some hum and hiss, It is also more prone to RFI. If you can not deal with hum and hiss in any measure you might not want to buy a Brio. The degree of hum/hiss/buzz will vary according to location of amp. It's a pretty well established fact that the Brio does this. And for the record the one I had did too (a brio 3). The noise of the brio could likely be eliminated by using more negative feedback in the circuit, but of course would be detrimental to the sound quality. Basically Rega probably decided The Brio sounds best with a bit of hum. If you still want to get Rega gear, the Mira and Elicit do not have the hum of the brio. If you want totally no noise coming from the amp, and that is your main objective, buy a Bryston.
