With regards to a DVD's soundtrack. What are the lowest frequencies that are sent out to the 5 main channels. I know you set the reciever to 60-80Hz etc. Depending on the speakers you have.

i.e. sattelite speakers may need a higher crossover setting.

But if you have floorstanders that go as low as 40Hz. Is there even a signal from the DVD that goes that low to Front L & R. Is the .1 in 5.1 dictated by the user manualy or by the actual DVD disc.

If you've got speakers set to small or similar, and you've got a crossover, then anything under the crossover will got to the sub as well as the .1 channel from the DVD sound mix as I understand it.

If you've got speakers set to large and no crossover then all speakers including sub will just get the appropriate channel from the 5.1 mix.

I don't know, but since THX recommend all frequencies 80Hz or below go to the sub, so i think everything 80Hz and below would be in the .1 channel, and the 5. would only have frequencies above 80Hz..
