Yes, provided you have plenty of time, and you can to get to the shops easily, and they have what you're looking for, and you can listen to the equipment for as much time as you want. So in the end there are plenty of reasons why one should read the reviews in a magazine.

Here's another reason: if you think they are experts, you'd better listen to them.
However, this "does well in reviews" sound wouldn't be subjective or objective; it would simply be arbitrary, and all reviewers (from all the magazines) should implicitly agree on that. That's why there is no such thing.
