Help with connection issues please

am trying to get the best sound from a new bluray player - I have the option to send sound from the player to the amp via: optical, coax or multi channel out. which would give me the best sound? does it matter if the player has 8 multi channel out and the ive only got a 5.1 amp? if i just use the optical method to connect amd i missing out on some sound quality? would really like some help before i spend a fortune on the wrong cables, thanks guys

I'm assuming your amp doesn't have hdmi or support the new hd format's.In which case you would be better off using the multi- channel outs, as you can let the bd player do the de-coding of the new hd formatts then output via the multi channel outs. if you use either optical or co-axial you'll only get 5.1 dd as it doesnt have the bandwidth for hd sound
