Hi, I am in the process of upgrading my old CRT TV and looking at 46-47” models.Having been reading up on models for ages I have now done too much research and drawn a blank!

My viewing distance is 4m and predominately it will be used for SD through Cable, (Virgin Media), I am also not worried about sound as this will be running through a processor etc, also going to get a new Blueray DVD player (Panasonic BD30) for HD DVD’s, and when more channels available will upgrade through Virgin Media.

My problem is I was all Plasma at first looking at Panasonic but am now going towards the LCD possibly Philips. I love my TV and want the best picture and do not want to be disappointed viewing SD as everywhere you go they are playing HD and that looks fantastic on most machines. I have a budget of £1600 for the TV and would appreciate some helpful buying advice.

Thanks and hope someone can give good advice.

Pioneer are the best plasmas (best tvs in fact!) you can buy, Id suggest against the 'philips' as ive heard a few stories of them not performing too well! You wont be dissapointed if you buy a Pioneer.

However, they only do 42" or 50" unfortunately

So if going for that size then its the Panasonic to my mind

Thanks for that, I have just been having another look and want the best, so as 50" is just to big will now search for 42" Pioneer. I thought they were going to stop making smaller ones?

Pioneer only make 50" or 60" plasmas. Last years 4280XD or 428XD may still be available, but not many left.

Pioneer HAS stopped making 42" televisions, although lots of hi-fi shops still sell them. They are not Full HD, although that shouldn't matter unless you're sitting closer than 8 feet (2.5 metres).

There are two versions of this Pioneer: the midrange PDP-4280XD, which is available for around £1300, and the high-end PDP-428XD, which is available for around £1500. The more expansive version has extra features although they both have a natural 16,000:1 contrast ratio without any high contrast settings on and a built-in freeview tuner with a 160GB HDD for recording.ÿ

Thanks for all your help, will look at Pioneer but might go for Panasonic 46" as it seems to be good with SD as well. Also saw the Pioneer 50" which is the best looking and has the most amazing picture and the 60" which I will have to knock my living room around to fit, so will have one in the next couple of years!
