Hi, I know this question has been asked loads but my boyfriend and I cannot agree on whether to get the TH37PX80 or the TX27LZD80. It definatly has to be 37" as room cant accomodate any bigger. We have the money for the LCD but I will be mostly watching SD which I have read here is poorer on the LCD. He however says he will be mostly watching HD (he has mac pro that he will buy blu-ray player for and hook up to tv) and has HDV camera that he uses for work that he wants to hook up to it also.

We looked at the 2 models today in Comet and when hooked up to HD I could see the LCD did seem better but does the SD look much worse on the LCD compared to the Plasma?

We were also looking at the Freesat boxes does this change which tv we should get?

If you're planning to get Freesat, you may want to wait a month or so for Panasonic's models with integrated Freesat receiver (story here) - save yourself cost and mess of a separate set-top box. Maybe a sizing issue, though....

Why would you recommend the Plasma over the LCD? Is it just the difference in price? That is my thinking that the LCD seems a lot more for me anyway to only occasionaly watch a film in HD.

We did read that article about the Freesas being intergated into the tv's but we only have £750 to spend and have just moved into flat together and currently have a 20" tv so not sure we will have the funds or want to wait till end of year when only have wee telly at the moment to watch everything on. Is there a date for the intergrated ones being released? I think I read that there will be 37" LCD though is that right? Also any idea of the cost?

Sorry, still no release or pricing details on the Panasonic Freesat TVs (beyond 'June' from Panasonic PR). And yes, 37in LCD but not plasma.

In your shoes i'd definitely pick the plasma - more for your money, and looks great with HD. Yes, the Full HD LCD set will show a little more detail with Blu-ray discs, but the plasma will give you a better all-round experience (better colours, motion-handling and contrast, for example) with everything you watch, plus is totally happy accepting Full HD content, so there are no futureproofing issues.

Go for the PX80, and the money you save will more than pay for a freesat box.

BTW, what's your viewing distance?

The viewing distance will be between 2-4m between 2 couches so we couldnt go bigger than the 37" really. Looked at the 42" plasma but too expensive and big, thanks though.

Is Panasonic the best make for both LCD and Plasma at this size? We looked at the Samsung 37" LE37M87BDX/XEU on Play which is £630 and is LCD with full HD and also the Toshiba Regza 37" 37XV503DB which is £600 on Play. This would solve the money problem of the LCD and we could still afford Freesat. But are all LCD tv's poorer on the SD?

I am not to good with technical things and was wondering is Freesat box going to totally take over from the Freeview box we now have? My boyfriends arguement about the LCD is that we wont be watching SD in 6months when Freesat takes over is this right?

Hi, i would not go for the Samsung - it's an older model and has a few issues from what i have heard.

The Toshiba you mention looks really good (i have just got my girlfriend the bottom of the range Toshiba 32AV504 for £380 and it's proving a corker so far, especially on regular DVD's thru component). After having seen her Tosh i am wondering myself whether to stick with the Panasonic 37PX80 for £607 or go for the Toshiba 37XV503 (which i can get for £547 after a 5% off voucher plus an extra 4% via quidco).

Freesat wont be included on many tv's at the moment and you will have to buy a higher end model to get it which will be well over your budget i expect. I heard freesat doesn't start til 2009 anyway.

Cheers,

JSM

We will take a closer look at the Toshiba then and see how it compares to the Pana LCD.

I read that the Freesat boxes were coming out at start of May, we were just planning on getting one of those not too bothered about getting tv with one built in at the moment. So if they are being release what will they be showing if Freesat not starting till 2009? Does the whole of UK get Freesat at the same time or will in be gradually released throughout the country?
