Firstly I hope this in the correct forum!

I run xbmc/kodi from a Ouya and would like to take advatantage of the airplay feature on xbmc and stream music from my Amazon Music account to my amp from the Ouya. The Ouya only has hmdo output so have been thinking about using a hdmi audio ectractor/de-embedder, basically its a little box that allows the hdmi singal to pass through it where it extracts the audio signal (2.0 or 5.1) from the cable and outputs it to a tos-link. I appreciate that it wont be perfect but as a cheapish quick fix I wondered if anyone else has used 1 and what results they got.

I am open to running the signal through a DAC if needed but want to try the box out first.

Any feedback is welcomed.

to be honest, it's just as cheap to buy one of the new raspberry pi's and a hifiberry dac for it and run that for your music. It would only be about 10 quid more than that box and sound much better!

I was looking at a raspberry pi for running xbmc initially but then this Ouya came up at the right price, I thought I'd give it a bash but it is limited with outputs but it does run xbmc very smoothly and I'd rather not invest in a raspberry pi just for music. I'd rather add a slightly better DAC to the Ouya signal and reap the rewards.

in fairness, the new version of the Pi they have just released runs xbmc much better than the Ouya....

Otherwise, yes, you will have to use a hdmi splitter such as that. I have no idea if it will affect the sound quality, although it's all digital so you should be good. An interim option would be to take the audio ouf of the TV if it has the outputs then put that in to the amp.

Mucho gracias Cheeseboy :D

I was hoping to avoid running any other cables from my TV as its a fairly long run, much easier from the Ouya as its located on the same rack as my separates. Do you run xbmc? and if so what on?

yeh, I run xbmc, but it's on a self built htpc so I could get a semi nice looking case to sit under the TV It's just got an AMD A3400 in it but it can run all the bulky skins if I want to and the built in graphics means less heat inside so it runs almost silent. Not as great as I would like it, but it does me till I can afford to splash out a bit more.

Just waiting for some of the plugins to get updated before I upgrade to Kodi, but I've been using xbmc since it first came out on the xbox, and it still astounds me just how good it acutally is for nothing!

Just had a thought actually, you might be able to get a cheaper splitter here http://www.dx.com/s/hdmi+audio+splitter

Ive been running it on my laptop for a while now but have only just stepped up to a 'tv box' setup, I was offered the Ouya for the right price so thought I'd give it a bash and its very nearly perfectly. I did look at raspberry pi's but from what i understand theyre about the same (on paper) performance wise as the Ouya and by the time I purchase all the extras I'd have spent more than the £40 I spent on the Ouya.

Ive been looking at splitters like the ones on that link, the only thing I'm unsure of is the quality of the item and have they all been tested and passed all the relevent standards? Dont wanna buy something that runs red hot and catches fire lol. Anything sold from within this country from a reputable retailer tends to retail for around the £50 mark, all the rest from Hong Kong etc can be got for about £25/30 but usually with a 2 pin euro plug rather than a 3 pin UK one. I dont mind spending the extra coin as long as it works.

honestly, I couldn't comment on the splitters from the hk site as i don't have one, but i've ordered stuff from them before and never had any problems. I guess it just depends how much you want to spend...
