Okay, okay. I know its early (but I like to plan). Also not sure if this should be better posted under off topic, but here goes.

The last few xmas days has seen both sets of out-laws come over for xmas dinner. Format is usually a few drinks, open some pressies, lots & lots of chatting (my mum is particularly good at this), dinner, followed by falling asleep in front of the telly.

As I have already seen all the bond films, plus bridge over the river kwai and the great escape many times, the last couple of years has seen me introduce a new agenda item, blockbuster film time, which slots in in between opening pressies and eating dinner. This consists of me playing a recentish blockbuster type film for all the family to enjoy

This is my first year with my high-def set-up. The choice of film would usually be quite easy as 5 out of 6 of us would easily sit down to watch Star Trek, Terminator Salvation, new transformers film, GI Joe. Something like that. However my mum is the fly in the ointment. She won't watch any film that has any violence, any swearing or any sex in it. I found out when I put 300 on last year!

So bearing in mind that I still want to entertain the rest of the troops (including me) I thought about the following

Slumdog Millionaire or Australia

Possibly "The Hangover" which i understand is a great laugh but not so sure if it doesnt pass the mum filter?

Maybe the new transformers film wouldn't be too bad?

Any other suggestions bearing in mind I want entertainment but no sex, violence or bad language.

Night At The Museum 2 Blu Ray

It's new, not many people have seen.

Picture will be great on your system, sound is master audio so that will also be very good.

It's fun and a very good movie.

Just seen the picture of your system Barnsleydave, it's very nice, I can't believe you have your plasma on a stand.

When I read your system I thought your plasma would be on the wall.

What is your stand called?

survivor:Any kids?

No, no kids. They are all over 18 (and won't be there until the evening anyway)

gel:What is your stand called? Looks like a hifi racks Podium XL.

Thanks Gel and ten points to daveh75. That's exactly what it is. I had a nightmare job finding a rack that would accommodate my TV and both my amp and my centre speaker. I needed two shelves, both with a minimum 210mm clearance between them. I tried everyone and no-one could help. Then I came across hifiracks.co.uk. Top bloke. He built me the rack to my exact specifications. Fabulous quality. Not cheap but looks absoloutly gorgeous. The light oak matches my speakers perfectly too. I've had quite a few people who have commented on what a nice piece of furniture it is (after they have gone 'OH MY GOD', when they see the TV).

I couldn't put the plasma on the wall as due to the shape of the room there isn't anywhere it would fit. Already had to give a chair away to make room for the AV rack

Now i know how to insert pictures I might put some on the "my system" topic page.

Christmas Vacation with Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo and of course Michael Caine Kermit and Miss Piggy in the Muppets Christmas Carol

Went on Friday to see Disney's new version of A Christmas Carol and it didn't really hit the spot for me I'm afraid...The Muppets Christmas Carol is much better though I am also hoping that the original 1951 version starring Alistair Sims ( which apparently comes out on Blu Ray in the US in about a week's time-God knows why it won't be release on Region 2 at the same time and in time for Christmas here is beyond me...why not just make all Blu Rays and DVD's Region Free!) will soon be available on R2 in the UK

Bah! Humbug!

I think national lampoons christmas vacation is one of my favourite comedy films ever. Good to have a laugh. Especially at christmas.

I like the sound of "The Hangover". As long as there definetly isn't any mum-dissaproving stuff in it. I think that needs more investigation

Definitely take Slumdog Millionaire off the list if she doesn't like violence - I think torture and stoning woud qualify as violence

Definitely agree about Slumdog, though it's a great film to watch on another occasion.

How about something by Pixar? If it's no violence at all, it's very hard to recommend something - particularly with something recent.

If a degree of violence was allowed, how about Valkyrie or Public Enemies?

How about The Incredibles? IMHO one of the best animated movies of recent years, U rated so it must be "Mother friendly". BTW I bought my own copy of The Great Escape just in case it wasn't on at Christmas - top film, never tire of watching it.

Thanks for the response Daveh75 and Barnsleydave.

I to had all sorts of problems with my stand, my centre speaker weighs a tone and is very big and I search the entire internet for a solution and in the end settled for the optiumum stand, you can get difernet size legs for it.

Look forward to seeing more picture's to for you sub and rears.

Thanks

I still can't believe that 60 inch pioneer plasma is on a stand, my local dealer has that same plasma on the wall and it is massive.

Does your stand have a weight limit?

Mmm. Difficult isnt it. My mrs refuses to watch Australia as she believes it will be total dross. Slumdog has some violence in so thats out. My mrs also advises me that the hangover would not be suitable for my mum. She would love wizard of oz to bits but everyone else would be bored. I need some raiders of the ark type of film (don't suggest any. we've all seen them all).

Maybe Star Trek wouldn't be so bad. Or as one from left field - Angels & Demons? Fantastic book. But doubt the film, will be anywhere near as good.

Gel - I'm sure the stand does have a weight limit. But whatever it is, it EASILY accommodates the kit I have. Those shelves are 40mm solid oak and are really heavy. Its 1612mm wide with an internal width of 1500mm. 500mm deep. Its incredibly solid and stable.

I only got the 600A because I just couldn't get hold of a 500A anywhere. Having said that I am now really pleased I got it.

I must admit I had seen the 600A in a huge warehouse/store, but it wasn't until I actually put it up in my house that I actually realised just what a massive beast it actually is. It actually blocks most of the light from coming through the window. But hey you can't have everything can you.

Hi,

Wonder if I try this 'multipurpose' angle on the OH I'll be able to get a bigger screen!?!?!?

What about Wall:E? Newish film, no violence and an environmental message to boot...what's the violence limit? Star Trek has some violence but the top level needs to be defined.

Cheers,

Cofnchtr.
