filled my stands today

Filled my super dreads with sand today cheapest upgrade i have ever made, bass is deeper overall sound is warmer. Only thing i want to sort now is the hi frequency its still a little on the bright side was thinking atlas hyper bi wire or if anyone has suggestions for separate cables for hi and low "shotgun" i think is the term don't want to go down the single wire route as i will be bi amping next. so anyone suggestions please.

If you have not already, the other cheap stand upgrade is blue tac between speaker and stand. That may be enough.

Shooter69 i have a dedicated equipment rack not sure of manufacturer but it cheap from richer years ago, am thinking of upgrade to partington. amp is on middle shelf cdp on top.

If the amp is sad on glass this could bring the treble on and make it harsh. It can be rectified by placing blue tac under the glass to isolate it from the main frame. It also could be the interconnects are getting interference from the mains cable, if they are close together seperate them, this may help.

Why not consider the more obvious source of harsh treble first like the rack and the glass the amp is on....

my rack is metal and glass, no harsh treble whatsoever. don't waste your time worrying about the material of the shelves and instead look at system synergy.

Getting back to the filling with sand, it'll cost about £30 - £40 to fill your stands with lead-shot (get it from a diving shop) and you will notice another step up in performance.

I read the OP's system wrong. Thought he had a marantz amp. I think you'd have a job and a half to get ultra refined/extended treble from a rotel amplifier and 6series b&w speakers, no offence whatsoever to the OP. Most products at this price have limits, its absolutely normal. Assuming he has a half decent rack and some blue tack I really would'nt worry about glass shelves ... or speaker cable change at this stage as this is amplifier/speaker dependant and the former is where I would concentrate/spend cash on as and when funds allow. As always, my opinion only and you may disagree.

Still looking to change speaker cable running some cheap richer sounds stuff not sure what its is, was hoping to bi wire and use somthing on the hf side to make treble less harsh and will be adding bi amp in future will spend around £150 on speakercable 2m pair terminated

I have the same amp/speaker combination as you (well, almost - I have the RA04 which is essentially the same, minus the remote.)

I've experienced the same brightness you describe after a while of owning the 685s, once my ears had adjusted fully. I'd put it down to the nature of the aluminium tweaters.

However, I decided to have a go at tweaking, and I've now managed to achieve a much warmer sound, which is perfect for my ears.

Firstly, as you've mentioned, a decent set of stands with a fill helps a lot. I then upgraded my cheap give-away cable to some of this stuff: http://www.audiovisualonline.co.uk/dynamic/eshop_products.set/ref/47/profigold-pgc7254-bass-reflex-speaker-cable/display.html

I decided to bi-wire with this cable and it really did make a difference - whether that was the cable itself or the bi-wiring, I don't know, but the resulting sound was much warmer and to my taste.
