ext hard disk on pc AND mac?

I am getting a Mac which I have never used before so do not know how things work on them and also between macs and windows pcs. As I prepare to move my itunes library from pc (winxp) to mac, the question:

can I copy the itunes folder from the pc onto an external hd and then connect this same hd to the mac and move the folder on to the mac? do hds work cross-platform like that? any particular formatting that has to be on that hd?

Alternatively, can I plug both the pc and mac via ethernet to a router and copy the folder between the two computers? network shared folders to be setup to enable this?

Use FAT32 to access a hard drive on both PC and Mac. Use the Mac (or something like Swissknife on the PC) to format the drive as Windows has limitations on how big a FAT32 drive you can create.
