Quite recently I had one of those moments listening to Andre Previn's unmatched EMI recording of Rachmaninov's 2nd Symphony.

Before that was when I last had a Pioneer A400 amp with Quad speakers. I was listening to Tom Waits' 'Small Change' album and the atmosphere was palpable. Great stuff.

I'm actually getting very tempted to try an A400 in my present system as with the Roksan source and the lovely Dali speakers I think it might be quite special.

I think you know it when you've found a great recording. If you get the performance and the production going well together it can be a stunning result.

My musical tastes are pretty diverse but Genesis just made me laugh, and not in a good way...... :silenced:

Same with all the Jim Steinman stuff, just can't handle it.

Maybe a change in my medication is required...... :?

I think you might be pleasantly surprised. I ran an A400 for years, saw no reason to mod it as some did, and my brother is still running it now I believe. Classic bit of kit. 🙂

Yes, the A400 Is one of those iconic pieces people remember in the same way they do the NAD 3020, etc. Never heard one but think I'm pretty happy where I am for now as far as HiFi goes. For now!

....you get a tingly moment. No, not one of those tingly moments (!), but one of those occasions when you're listening to the stereo, you've got the setup, er, set up, to a tee and you pop on a CD. And then it hits you. That moment where the presentation, the recording, the gear all combine and mkae you sit back and take notice. Just had one of those just now - Genesis, Seconds Out, Virgin fatbox 2CD set, the track's The Cinema Show, pure, effortless musical bliss. The hifi's gone, the band's in the room. We are happy. 🙂

I know exactly where you're coming from there RS. This is what good quality hifi and music is all about.

Yep Steve, couldn't agree more. I've no doubt there are better setups out there, but this ticks the boxes for me. Detail, clarity, the Tannoys are great in my room and the whole setup gels beautifully. I'd need to spend a load more to get a serious step up in quality - which I don't write off, but not for a while at any rate!

Depends on what it is. Beer doesn't work well with music I find. Wine on the other hand...

Must admit, I don't mind which hand a glass or cup is in (boom boom!); beer works for me, so does wine, but a Sunday morning with Joni Mitchell's Hejira, a coffee, the windows open with the sounds of the sea nearby is hard to beat. Pure unadulterated pleasure.
