Hello enthusiasts!

I'm about to embark on a quest to replace my aging home cinema set up (Linn audio / Loewe 42" Spheros) which is now 8 years old.

I've been scanning the reviews and see little (or no) mention of Loewe or B&O. Are these just overpriced ornaments and as a result don't feature anywhere here or are they simply in a different league because of the big price tags (and as such were money no object they would get a lot more press)?

There seems to be a consensus that Pioneer 50" plasma is the cats pyjamas.... But what about the B&O Beovision 9 50" or Loewe Individual 52" Compose?

Any advice greatly received!

Thanks,

Nick

PS Would love to see some suggestions of sound set up to go with whatever HD Screen I end up with (aestehetics are important to me as well as functionality / performance) eg speakers, DVD, amps, processors (are they still necessary or would a DVD / Sky+ HD box do that bit for me)...

hi nick

i am sure that they are in the buying guide in the back of the magazine but dont have a copy to hand. (i think a while ago there was a competition on the website for a Lowe TV).

prob not on the website as not all reviews are on the site yet and it may take some time

they do review Lowe and B&O TVs but wrt panasonic, LG, Pioneer samsung they are low volume makers and have a limited no of models etc...

also the mag does take cost in consideration in its ratings

A couple of Loewe tv s have made 5 stars on review and one was given away as a prize on this site but I don't recall a large one ever really cutting it. Don't foget that WHS&V have reviewed 35 K projectors in the past so price isn't an issue either ! If they were any good then I'm sure I'd have read about them on this or the other sites I frequent (sorry team) but I haven't. They seem to be Premiership footballer or city banker fodder like you say (although I haven't seen one ITF for a few years)

The truth is that Pioneer consistently come top of most reviews because they're that good.

Loewe and B&O tellies are (to my mind) style over substance. So whilst you can get models from those makers which are about as good as Panasonic or Pioneer (for example, and generalising), you're paying a large premium for the privilege. And the style isn't even that much better in relation to the volume makers, IMO.

Hifi and AV equipment is slightly different - 1) B&O gear is just stupid money for what you get and 2) there is style a-plenty in even budget gear nowadays (though it's still true that some makers are more expensive because of how they look - my Primare gear being admitted culprits).

Loewe and B & O televisions do get reviews in the mag, but due to their (in case of B & O- substantially) higher asking price than comparative tvs, they don't get that much attention.

IMHO B& O used to be worth the price premium, when tube tvs were the order of the day. The picture quality was great, the controls intuitive and the tv design good to look at.

With all the flat tvs of nowadays, to me B & O aren't worth the premium over panasonic and pioneer anymore. The only benefit of owning a B & O and Loewe I can think of, is the better integrated sound bars (useless if you plan to buy surround sound anyway), the automatic light adjusting feature in B& o's and the pride of (brand)ownership.
(Also, one thing to be wary of, B & O used to use very brand specific connections, i.e. only B & O would do.)

Nick,

If you have the cash to burn, get the new 9G Pioneer TVs. B&O and Loewe are way overpriced.
