Hiya, changed from a Sony all in one system with their tall speakers to a Sony 840 receiver and KEF 1002 speaker system. To be fair, although small, neat and passing the 'wife' test, I find the whole effect a bit insipid. Is that me, a placement issue, or are they really a bit average?

Have you heard the system previously? If you have, did it sound fine then? If it did, I'd say it's a placement issue or setup issue. If you've not heard it before, you have no point of reference, other than what you expect it to do.

I have the kef 1002.1 speakers driven by a Yamaha ra-1020.

Due to family, wife etc it s a compromise. The living room is not big enough for stand mounts in my opinion so....

Depending on the size of room could be an issue if too big.

If you can wall mount the speakers play with the sub settings and if your amp has an auto set up the sound can be reasonably convincing.

It works in my living room not the most detailed but effects are steered well and dialogue is convincing.

Tinker especially the sub - set the cross-over high at 120db on the amp, speakers to small and play with the levels - if you can.

Their not roo bad.

120Hz

I don't think he'll be wanting to set the sub to 120dB :)

You know how it is. You voice a concern that you have been living with and after that you really have to fix it. My KEF eggs were really bugging me. So, I dug out my old Totem Dreamcatchers to use as the front left and right speakers, moved the eggs to the surround back and side positions. I then picked up a Focal CC 700 centre from a local shop for 150 quid and, if I say so myself, the whole sound has improved immensely. I know that you should match the front speakers etc, but I am not after perfection, just adequacy; it is now very adequate indeed. The Focal centre has the presence that I was lacking, and I have always loved the Dreamcatchers. That will keep me going until my next upgrade itch starts.
