Hi

Can anyone tell me if its possible to use the pre outs on the Denon avr 2400 to plug in a stereo amp to run the front two speakers in a dolby atmos set up and be able to turn off the Denon and just use the stereo amp with the same front speakers when I want to listen to music. I am confused because the manual starts talking about Zones and I have not really got my head around that. as I only use 1 room for audio/video.

If this is not possible, is there a way of switching the front speakers from the Denon to the Stereo amp without having to physically swap the cables around, as there really isnt room for another pair of speakers.

The reason I ask is i am happy with the audio on the video side of things, but listening to stereo audio whether it be from speakers or headphones is pretty awful through the Denon, and with the Boxing day sales thought I would take advantage and get a stereo amp.

Yes.

Run an RCA interconnect cable from the FL and FR pre outs on the Denon to the AV (if your amp has them) or Aux (if it doesn't) RCA inputs on your stereo amp. The former usually bypasses the volume and tone controls so you don't have to play with the stereo amp settings when switching between AV and say CD playback. The AVR takes control of level and tone settings when you run the equalization routine.

DO NOT try connecting speaker terminals on the AVR to the stereo amp inputs as this would sure as Santa fry your stereo amp. Likewise do not connect speaker cables from both the AVR and the stereo to one set of speakers directly.

I think the OP is interested in music quality so would like to connect a stereo amplifier to the Av so he can have the best of both worlds which I do myself and works very well .

..but if, as he says, the 2400 is poor with stereo then, perhaps, a llok at the speakers is called for. The Denon is quite musical.

Depends what you compare it to, and what he's connecting to, in the "proper stereo" department.

Most AVRs can't hold a candle to anything above a 500 quid amp and 500 quid speakers.

I had the same Denon for some time and had it coupled with a Cambridge CXA80 (£900) for stereo which I subsequently sold because the difference was so slight. To be fair though, I did know that my aim was to save my pocket money for the Anthem to do both jobs.

My last "proper stereo" was in 2010 (in The Sturgeon Soviet Socialist Republic of Scotchland) and consisted of a Cyrus CD-XT feeding a Cyrus DAC-X thence to a Cyrus Pre-X and twin X-Powers driving bi-amped ProAc Studio 140 speakers. All with good but not ludicrous Chord cables.

No AVR, no matter how expensive, could match that setup I assure you.

Money issues, a new house, and the Memsahib have prevented its replacement since I moved back to the US in 2011. :-(

I bought my current set up before i moved and although the surround is great i'm wondering if i would introduce the bronzes into front L/R duties but also keep them for stereo from the CA.

this got my thinking as to how the flacs would sound via the Denon played using the shield as my music library. I found this little project which is cheap and will prevent AVR/AMP/Speakers going pop. I might do this as the first stage and if i decide the sound is good enough then I might dispense with the CA gear and move that elsewhere or sell bits.

I still need to figure out which audio settings in the shield/SPMC and denon will be most convenient but should be fun.
