Does anyone have any experience of the onboard phono stage in Denon's current PMA-720ae amplifier. I have just invested in one (being delivered tomorrow) . I wonder is it equal to ( or better than) budget offerings such as Cambridge Audio 551p or Project Phono Box AM.

Cannot say I've heard it but knowing Denon it will not be too shabby. Personally I wouldn't waste money on a cheap preamp. Spend it on music or wait until you can afford a more expensive preamp or better still upgrade your cartridge.
I'm using the same amp almost exclusively for vinyl and I very happy. Don't have a lot to compare it to but it at least matches and maybe exceeds the stage in my old Arcam Alpha 5+. Your own ears are gonna be the best judge though, wait until you have the amp and enjoy it for a while, you'll soon work out if you want a change.
