Can it control devices without needing to switch to the device on the remote?

I ended up getting one of these as a result of this thread. Received it yesterday and got it set up last night - all relatively intuitive and easy.

Five remotes now consigned to the shelf and a very pleased wife who no longer has to think about why she can't get sound if she plays a DVD or watches TV.
