I will be in need of a large (46-50") screen soon so am looking to buy in the sales. Budget is up to £1000 and originally was looking at 40" LED but having given consideration to screen size requirements, it looks like LED will have to be over looked given budget. Screen is used predominantly for gaming and TV (virgin media). Priorities at size, image quality and sound, then DNLA cert (ideally) then LED (if possible).... I'm baffled by the combination of TVs available and when I find one that looks good, typically WHF won't have reviewed it so am wary of buying. Cheers

Any reason you don't want a plasma? (A very bright room, say - plasmas are still typically more reflective than LCDs)

Because that budget, screen size - and your gaming bias - makes plasma an obvious suggestion. And if you're looking for LED backlighting then you're obviously keen on a picture with good blacks and contrast - again, the best plamsas excel in these areas.

Let me look around for some deals and i'll be back with some suggestions.

Blimey, there are some cracking deals around.

If you want to add 3D into the equation, LG's excellent 50PX900 (reviewed here) can be had for under £1000 - such as £999 here at Cheap Electricals.

If you want to forget 3D, our 50in+ TV of the year - Panasonic's TX-50V20B (review here) can also be had at bargain prices - £1034 here at Amazon, for example. That'll give you slightly better sound than the LG, too.

There's two corking suggestions; i'll go away and explore 46in LCD options.

Hi Clare;

I was simply looking at LED as, having seen them in action, they did induce a 'wow' factor.

Having looked at LED prices and not wanting to adopt 3d yet, I'm now of the opinion I forgo these for now and go for something which enables me to get the size I want - ideally with DNLA.

I thought that screen reflection could be an issue as the room is dual aspect but curtains could always be closed so that would be a happy compromise.....

Yep, LCD TVs do tend to have that colour pop 'wow' factor in store - usually helped by showing a lot of animation, too! And the best high-end LED-backlit LCD sets can be brilliant, but they're typically not cheap. I'll see if I can ferret out any bargains.

Both the plasma sets i've suggested support DNLA, by the way.

Ooh, i'd just spotted that one from your story, Mr C. Brilliant size/spec at that price.

Check before buying that it's OK to return if you have backlight issues, though - the 40in version we reviewed did (not that it's any indicator the larger one, or indeed other 40in models will).

Yeah. I was looking at that one just a moment ago.

Whilst using the WHF screen size guide, we should get a 50", I think a 46" will be more appropriate.

Comet currently have it listed at £899 online one). That looks a good price.

hmmm.... just had a nose around around the bigger electricals in town (Currys/Comet) to gauge size etc and its a nightmare - esp. as my wife is worried 50" is too big (but imho the diff between 46 and 50 will be marginal).

Had a good chat with a seemingly knowlegable bod in Currys who didn't 'sell' at me, and was happy to discuss and impart advice.

They've got the Samsung PS50C680 for £898 with 3D BR player and spare specs (or £! more at £899 for the TV alone!!!!!). It's a plasma and he said precisely what's been said here.... we looked at cheaper and more expensive but we kept coming back to it (only drawback is no HD tuner but thats prob not a major issue)

So I started out looking for a 40" non-3D LED set and I'm looking at a 50" 3d plasma and the only thing stopping me buying was the fact I'd left my wallet at home!!!

One further concern is the quality of 'standard def' TV on such a mamouth TV..... will it be watchable?

Cheers all.

If the TV has a decent upscaler, yes (or if your Virgin Media box does a reasonable upscaling job for TV).

Buying a bigger set will make you want to watch more HD, that's for sure!

The Samsung you've spotted is a great set, but the LG PX990 I mentioned in my first reply is a noticeable step up (and you get the HD tuner, too...)

Yes, it's a good price, but that's with a one year warranty - John Lewis and a few others offer five years as standard. Watch the Comet price jump up when you factor that into account. It's worth thinking about.

For info, I ended up getting the PS50C680 deal.

Out of stock (yesterday) at both Currys and Comet but they (Currys) agreed to deliver TV and Blue Ray player today FOC (second specs and DVDs to follow). Impressed with Currys flexibilty / assistance.

Must admit its a bleeding big set once in the room but we'll get used to it.

Hard to comment on the quality as running low contrast etc to run in but the 3D is very impressive using the Virgin 3D demo's.
