hard to say. If you are currently connecting your iPod to your AVR via USB you are using the DAC in your receiver which should already be a significant improvement over the iPod's internal DAC.

Not that my knowledge is particularly broad, but I don't think most DACs have a special input to take a digital feed from an iPod, so most DACs I've looked at would require the use of a digital transport to get an optical or coaxial digital signal from the iPod that you could then connect to the DAC. Looking around might dig up some more, but I think the irDAC is one of the few DACs with the functionality you are looking for.

Hi, bit late. You can possibly plug your ipod directly onto the irDac through the ipods usb charging cable. Having gone through many DACs with varied results from poor to just ok the irdac dac has truely made a difference in my system. Bass is tidier, treble detail is enhanced and soundstage opens right up. Overall gives a fuller more detailed sound.

Late reply but I only saw this after I'd been searching a similar solution. My music files are stored in ALAC across two 160gb iPod classics, which I find very convenient and readily accessible. However I seem to be one of a few doing it this way! I must be out of touch!

Anyway I use a Teac DS-H01 (under £100!) and get good results through my old but still good (to my ears!) Denon PMA350SE amp and MS814 floor standers.

I think it compares favourably with the Denon DCD835 I also use very occasionally now!

I realise things have moved on in 15 years but breathing new life into my old set up was great, the sound is more spacious and involving through the TEAC DAC if occasionally a little lacking in weight.

It's a pity the classic has been discontinued. I was always hoping for a new version with a 320gb HDD because my entire collection no longer fits on 160gb. If my classic dies I think I will replace it with a FiiO X3, although my music collection will have to be split across several flash memory cards. The advantage of the FiiO is that it doesn't need a digital dock or licensed equipment to get a digital feed from it.
