A friend to me has gave me an old hard disk. he upgraded his computer.
Now i have it on my pc.

It was not empty and i now seem to have found about 400 albums of music
the file types are aiff and they are big and i wish to change the size.
is it better to change them to mp3 or some other ?

Firstly: this kind of sharing is against the law. But you probably knew that already.
Aiff by my knowledge is lossless. Better keep it lossless to keep the quality. Mp3 are lossy files, i.e. quality gets lost forever. No return possible.
You'll have to ask others if it's worth (saving space) to convert aiff to apple lossless or flac.

As solomon1 has said you are best keeping it lossless, of which FLAC is best for PC. I import all my music .aiff on my mac. The great thing about lossless (other than getting the best quality!) is you can change to other lossless file types in the future. Each time you convert to a different lossy filetype you lose some data.

Do a google for some free PC based conversion software, there is hardly a shortage.
