Hi all, I am a newbie here.. Just typed my question only to find I need to change the settings for the text which crashes everytime, so sorry, no paragraphs ! Looking to buy the Panasonic BD30 but need some advise for a novice. Which is better, connect to TV (Pioneer 428XD) via HDMI or into AV Yamaha VX2600 ? Audio side, appreciate I cannot receive full HD sound, but do I connect via analogue (6 connection thingy), or digital, either/or or both into AMP. Where does PCM come into things ! Sorry for the basic level one stuff...... Thanks... Gill

Connect the Panasonic DVD player using the HDMI cable and use an optical cable from your dvd player to your amp. If optical is not an option with your amp go for a good quality Audio cable from the likes of QED.

connect the bd30 to your yamaha using the 6 chanel analgue and also a coaxial or optical (coaxial is best).

The 6 chanel will enable your blueray to decode hd audio and send it to your yamaha whilst the coaxial/optical will handle standard dolby digital.

saying all this through i dont think the bd 30 will decode any of the hd audio formats, you need to double check.

Hi - Amp will accept optical & digital and have decent leads with current set up. How does the Panasonic handle standard DVD ? Currently my amp upscales to 1080i and wonder what improvement there may or may no be !

True HD is far superior to an upscaled image. though I don't know what the panasonic is like with standard DVD. I suggest you google it for an answer, unless someone on here can shed some light on it.

Even though the BD30 doesn't decode the new HD formats, quite a few Blu-Ray discs use PCM soundtracks which can be sent to your amp via the 6 channel analogue output so it's worth doing this for these titles. The sound will be much better than the Dolby Digital / DTS encoded versions on these discs.

Thanks professorhat, so the six channel is for the Blue ray disc sound, but I still need the digital for the sound for normal DVD or does the HMDI carry this signal ?

The HDMI will carry this signal. I don't have a BD30 to see, but I imagine there is a setting for the HDMI output which sets it to bitstream which is what you want for standard Dolby Digital / DTS (you'll still need this for some Blu-Ray discs as well as not all have the PCM soundtrack). If you ever get a new AV amp capable of decoding the new HD sound formats, this will also be in the correct setting for these as well so it'll just be a case of hooking it up to the new amp via HDMI.
